Enclosure castle wall

The castle wall (also Oberbräuschlössl called) is located in Radstadt in the district of Sankt Johann im Pongau from Salzburg (Castle Street).

history

According to records in the cathedral chapter , Jakob von Mauer owned the Mauer estate in 1350; It is not completely certain that Jakob is from the Lungau family who came from the Wall . Originally a residential tower can be assumed here, as was usual for the Pongau .

Then the property came to the Graf family. In 1344 Konrad Graf exchanged his post as landlord of Werfen with the judge's position in Radstadt. His son Heinrich acquired Schernberg Castle in 1370 and also inherited the noble title of the Schernberg family, which had died out. In 1396 Konrad II became Radstadt's keeper . In the following generations, too, one member of the family exercised the function of carer. This was the beginning of the acquisition of several rulers in this area, such as Castle Mauer, then around 1400 the Count's House in Radstadt, Castle Tandalier and Castle Lerchen .

Jakob Graf died in 1587. His two sons Konrad and Heinrich leased the Mauer estate, and the tenants were obliged to maintain the castle; the payments to the manor, which was exercised by the Salzburg cathedral chapter, remained with the two Schernbergers. Both brothers died in 1610. Heinrich Graf von Schernberg left behind nine underage children. These came under the guardianship of Josef Hunt von Ainödberg , at that time the caretaker of Saalfelden , and Burkhard Schwaiger, district judge of St. Veit and owner of Tandalier Castle . These two leased walls for their ward. With the approval of the cathedral chapter, in 1617 the ownership of Mauer was dismembered and the individual properties were sold. The main part was bought by Heinrich von Elsenheim, Radstadt's caretaker; however, he died the next year. His widow left the Mauer residence to Jakob Wilpenhofer von Schloss Lerchen.

Like the Grafs, the Wilpenhofer had become wealthy in the Radstadt area. In 1528 they were able to open a tavern in Altenmarkt and a hundred years later they were multiple castle owners and keepers of the Salzburg archbishops in this area. In 1622 the property passed to Jacob's cousin Abel Wilpenhofer, who had to pay off the other heirs. After his death († 1628), his brother-in-law Baptist Voglmayr, land judge and mountain judge in Rauris , sold the Mauer residence to Hans Wagnhitter, Mayor of Radstadt. He was also the landlord of Radstadt and therefore tried to obtain a hospitality license for Mauer. Since this failed, he sold the residence back to Katharina Gößl, a member of the Wilpendorfer family. Due to a lack of money, this wall had to be ceded to Josef Ziurletta, Radstadt keeper and owner of Lerchen Castle. This succeeded in clearing the Mauer residence in exchange for all obligations towards the cathedral chapter. His son, Johann Christoph Ziurletta, who succeeded him, was not interested in Mauer and in 1622 sold it to the innkeeper Christian Leitner von Radstadt. His daughter Luzia Barbara, married to Martin Friedrich Wishofer, owned the castle for more than 40 years. In 1733 it came to Johann Kaspar Pichler on the Kaufweg. This was the prince-archbishop's official and had made it from the "signatory at the nursing court" to the "high princely councilor and court paymaster".

This was followed by members of the Kaswurm family who worked as innkeepers and brewers in Radstadt: Adam Kaswurm (1741), Johann (1754) and Martin (1797). He tried again to obtain a restaurant license, which he only succeeded in 1804. The property became the "Oberbräuslössl" and a popular excursion destination. Martin Kaswurm handed over to his daughter Theresia in 1830, who was married to Peter Ehrenreich. After her death († 1855) the property passed to her husband, who, however, had to sell everything to his stepmother Anna Ehrenreich due to excessive indebtedness. They had the property auctioned in 1864 and so it came to the brewing family Johann and Karoline Kendlbacher.

In 1865 a fire devastated the castle, including its extensions and the curtain wall. The family had to rebuild the castle, but without completely rebuilding the curtain wall. In 1892 Eduard Kendlbacher came into possession by inheritance, who died in 1906 without leaving a will. His five children were still minors, but in 1913 Johann Kendlbacher received all of the property. In 1917 he was inherited by his four siblings Marianne, Eduard, Vinzenz and Karl. In 1919 the property was divided between Marianne and Karl and in 1922 it came entirely to Karl Kendlbacher.

In 1936 the property was auctioned again and came to the Sparkasse von Ried im Innkreis ; only the house archive remained with the Kendlbacher family. In 1938 Hans Pichler bought the Schlössl. He sold it in 1947 to the health resort doctor of Gastein, Wagenbichler. This family renovated the castle and adapted it to the needs of the 20th century. The Wagenbichler family is still the owner.

Mauer Castle today

The Mauer Ansitz is a three-storey building with bay windows and a low, crippled hipped roof . It has a square plan. After 1565, Jakob Graf zu Schernberg gave the residence its present appearance. Until a fire in 1865, the property , which was enclosed by a fortified curtain wall, was reinforced with four towers; Today the two southern towers still stand. The loopholes in the towers and in the wall are walled up.

The entrance gate on the east side bears the year 1577 and four stone hemispheres. A central bay protrudes on the south side and is placed on consoles on the first floor; This ends in a wooden structure with a gabled roof is covered. At the rear there is a separate extension for the toilet facility , followed by a dairy and stables. On the east side under the eaves is a storage door through which the harvest could be brought in. On the west side there is a spoiler , presumably from Radstadt, with the inscription " PARIS EX COM LODRONI ARCHIEPS SALISBURG F ANNO DOM MDXXXII ", which has nothing to do with the castle, but indicates the fortification of Radtstadt by Paris Lodron during the Thirty Years' War . Inside there are barrel vaults with stitch caps on the ground floor . On the upper floor there are richly profiled coffered ceilings from the time of Jakob Graf.

The castle is privately owned and is not open to the public.
