The 22nd Japan Cup (officially: Japan Cup Cycle Road Race ) took place on 20 October 2013, Japanese Utsunomiya instead. The one-day race was part of the UCI Asia Tour 2014 and was classified in the highest category 1.HC within this . The first fifteen drivers thus received points for the Asia ranking list; ProTeams drivers were not entitled to collect points.
Attendees
At the start there were seven ProTeams, for whom the race marked the end of the 2013 season, as well as a Professional Continental team , eight Continental teams and a national team. A maximum of five drivers per team were allowed to start. Well-known participating riders included Richie Porte from Sky ProCycling , defending champion Ivan Basso and Peter Sagan (both Cannondale Pro Cycling ), Michael Rogers ( Team Saxo-Tinkoff ), Damiano Cunego ( Lampre-Merida ) and Daniel Martin ( Garmin-Sharp ). With Bernhard Eisel from Sky, Matthias Krizek from Cannondale and Matthias Friedemann from the Champion System Pro Cycling Team , three German-speaking professionals also took part in the race.
Track and course of the race
In the city of Utsunomiya north of Tokyo , the Japan Cup 2013 took place on a 14.1 kilometer circuit that had to be driven ten times. Then there was a final lap of 10.3 kilometers. Each lap started with the ascent to Kogashi, where about 125 meters of altitude had to be overcome. Towards the end of each lap there was another smaller ascent with about 50 meters of altitude. A total of 151.3 kilometers had to be covered on the topographically not easy route.
On the last lap, the Australian Michael Rogers set the race decisive attack after preparatory work by his teammates Yevgeny Petrow and Rory Sutherland from Saxo-Tinkoff and celebrated his first success in 2013 as a soloist in the last race of the season. The three-man chasing group with Jack Bauer , Damiano Cunego and Julián Arredondo , who finished fourth like last year, ended up being 44 seconds behind Rogers. Taiji Nishitani , in ninth place, was the best-placed local Japanese driver.
