Wiesendangen Castle Tower

The Schloss Wiesendangen is a residential tower from the 12th century. It stands in the middle of the village of Wiesendangen in the canton of Zurich near Winterthur and has been used as a local museum since 1967 .

history

There are several hypotheses about the builders of the residential tower. Earlier research is named by Graf Berchtold von Märstetten . “It used to be said that the direct descendants of the Count von Märstetten, who were mentioned 150 years earlier and came from the Nellenburg family, belonged to the ministerials of Wiesendangen. According to other records, the tower was erected around 1120 with the aim of irritating the owners of Kehlhof, an area of the settled Episcopate of Constance from across the river. All that can actually be confirmed is that there was a ministerial Kyburger family von Wiesendangen-Frauenfeld in the middle of the 12th century . ”Towards the end of the 14th century, the lords of Wiesendangen seem to have died out. In 1408 the castle tower was owned by farmers. In 1660, the county governor Josef Wuhrmann was mentioned as the owner. In 1958 it became the property of the Wiesendangen community, which restored the building from 1965 to 1967 and set up the local museum in it.

Construction and structural changes

“A superstructure made of wood rose on a square base 9 meters on each side and 11 meters high. This was replaced by a hipped roof in the course of the 18th century . Its walls are made of large and broken stones . The way in which the corner stones were cut into four corners shows that the work was not very well cared for. ”In the 19th century, the building received various additions that were removed by the municipality after it was bought.
