The Friedberg is the ruin of a hillside castle in the town of Miles in the Canton of Zurich on Lake Zurich in Switzerland.

location

The ruin is 540  m above sea level. M. in a small depression above the community. On the west and south sides, the terrain slopes steeply into the ravine of the Dorfbach. In the east, a natural small moat used to separate the castle plateau from the nearby hamlet . The plateau was about fifty meters long and about thirty meters wide.

investment

A moat has been partially excavated in the north . It was carved out of the sandstone about ten meters wide and about four meters deep and has almost vertical slopes. Thick deposits of sand and sea chalk indicate that the water in the ditch was dammed.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the castle area and ditches were leveled and used for agriculture, so that only a few remains of the wall remained on the ravine side. On the basis of foundations, the course of a circular wall in the lake-side part could be verified; its further course is uncertain. Excavations inside the complex did not reveal any traces of the wall. A 28.64 m deep Sodbrunnen was filled at its discovery in 1976 to the brim with rubble. It was excavated by hand and the fountain rim was rebuilt.

Between 1976 and 1979 the walls that had disappeared were exposed again and extensive excavations were carried out. In addition to stove tiles, pot shards, spindle whorls , fittings and arrowheads, as they were also found on other castle complexes, wooden everyday dishes, well-preserved pieces of leather, two small copper scoops and an approx 14th century, which is considered to be one of the oldest wind instruments in Switzerland.

history

Not much is known about the history of the castle. Archaeological finds suggest that it was built around 1200. In the 13th century, large areas of the right bank of Lake Zurich were under the administration of the Regensbergers ; In 1306 Lütold VII von Regensberg referred to Friedberg as 'our castle'. Later the Regensbergers sold the Friedberg to the wealthy knight Götz Mülner von Zürich, who called himself Mülner von Friedberg in 1321, probably for financial reasons .

The accumulation of finds from the first half of the 14th century suggests that the castle was expanded under the new masters. They later gave up their seat in Meilen and later also sold the bailiwick rights .

Around 1390, the citizen of Zurich, Jakob Bletscher, bought the castle; it is not known whether he ever lived there. In any case, its gradual decline seems to have begun even then. The castle area and the neighboring farmstead have been privately owned since 1593.
