The castle park is incurred in the 17th century, around five  hectares large park in Buckow in the district Oderland in Brandenburg .

location

The park is located north of Buckow's market square and is around 100 meters wide there. It extends to around 350 meters in length and widens trapezoidally to the north to around 400 meters. It rises slightly by around 5 meters. A plateau shows where the Flemming 's castle , built around 1680 with a facade by Schinkel, was located. The park also has a lawn for sunbathing, a bowling green, a children's playground and a water fountain . In the west the park is bordered by a drainage ditch, in the east by the Griepensee and in the north by the 61 meter high Schlossberg . The main entrance is on the market square behind the culture and tourism office, which has moved into the old warm bath building.

History and current use

The creation of the park is closely linked to the construction of the baroque palace by Heino Heinrich vom Flemming in the 17th century. At his instigation, a pleasure garden was created with geometrically arranged flower beds and a kitchen garden in which fresh fruit and vegetables were cultivated for the castle kitchen. In the 18th century, it was converted into an English landscape garden , which, instead of the baroque austerity, was characterized by an airy modeled terrain and curved paths. Visual axes enabled a view through the park. At the end of the 19th century, the northern part of the park was given its present form. The palace, which was redesigned in the classical style by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1802 , was damaged in World War II and demolished in 1948. The area of the castle was included in the castle park, creating a continuous connection to the market square. The city created lawns that are structured with rose plants . At the same time the fishing house on the Griepensee was reconstructed, the design of which is said to go back to Schinkel. At the entrance there is a herb garden designed by Sebastian Kneipp , in whose honor there is also a water treading area at the entrance. Valerian , cinquefoil , gold balm , St. John's wort and chamomile , for example , are grown in the garden.

The park is used for a variety of cultural events, for example for the open-air classical music concerts in the green , the Buckower Rose Days or the Buckower Garden Days . In addition, guided tours through the herb garden are offered.

flora

The lawn is bordered on both sides by preferably native trees . There are a total of around 30 tree species in the park, including linden , oak , alder , beech , elm , ash and maple , and some individual spruce and fir trees . Some horse chestnuts , plane trees and the Caucasian wingnut are planted along the paths . The characteristic trees in the park are explained by signs. You can also see a grove of box trees , lilacs and the European pipe bush .

Ice cellar

Entrance to the former ice cellar

In the north-western part of the garden there is a ruin of an ice cellar . This is the only building that is still preserved from the former palace complex. It was built around 1890 and served as a storage room for ice cream in the summer months. In winter, saws were used to remove large blocks of ice from the Schermützelsee . With the help of a cart or a sleigh, they were brought to the ice cellar and probably stored there on wooden grates. In the middle of the circular cellar there was a drainage channel for melt water. The capacity is said to have been sufficient for the ice requirement of two years, as one could not be sure that it would be cold enough in each winter to form ice. The roof is no longer there today; a surrounding grille on the upper part was only installed at a later date as protection for the visitors.
