On October 20, 2009 Schmack Biogas AG filed for insolvency proceedings due to impending insolvency. Negotiations with banks and investors to rescue the Schmack Biogas Group previously could not prevent the bankruptcy. On January 22nd, 2010, after parts of the business were sold to the Viessmann Group, liquidation of the stock corporation was initiated. The remaining business has since been continued in the successor company Schmack Biogas GmbH under the umbrella of Viessmann.

In May 2017 , Viessmann announced that Schmack would withdraw from the market for the construction of new systems in order to concentrate on the maintenance, operation and renovation of existing biogas and biomethane systems as well as on the delivery of components.

Therefore, the company sold its subsidiaries in the months that followed. First the US subsidiary Bioferm Energy Systems was sold; In January 2018, the Italian subsidiary, which kept the name Schmack Biogas and took over all planning and construction activities for the plants, was also sold through a management buyout .
