On the Topographia Ducatus Montani by Erich Philipp Ploennies from 1715, the courtyard is marked as Schmalt . Under this name it is also shown on the topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1824 and on the Prussian first survey from 1843 as Zum Schmalt . In the course of the 20th century, the place also bears the name Schmalt on measuring table sheets .

In the 19th century, Schmalt was still part of the Oberdüssel community of the mayor of Wülfrath . From 1816 to 1861 it belonged to the Elberfeld district and from 1861 to the old Mettmann district .

In 1847 the railway line of the Prince Wilhelm Railway Company was opened. The route was laid directly past the farm.

In 1888 seven people lived in Schmalt in one house.

With the municipal reform of 1929, the eastern part of the Oberdüssel district around Schmalt was split off from Wülfrath and incorporated into the newly founded city of Wuppertal.

In 1990, the gap in the federal road 224 between Velbert and Wuppertal was completed on a high embankment past Schmalt . After completion, the expressway was upgraded to the federal highway 535 in 2007 .
