Schmitto Kling

Siegfried "Schmitto" Kling (born August 15, 1946 in Bad Mergentheim ; † December 23, 2018 in Haßloch ) was a violin maker , jazz violinist , composer and interpreter. He was a German Sinto . His music is categorized as gypsy jazz .

Life

From his father - also a violin maker and violinist - he learned to play the violin as well as the craft. He was able to play the first melodies at the age of six. Schnuckenack Reinhardt was married to his sister, with whom there were first appearances in the family circle.

In 1971 he founded his own ensemble, Hot Club the Zigan , with which he performed publicly in Germany and France. Since the late 1970s, he has been invited several times to record recordings with other artists, such as Hannes Beckmann . In 1979 he played at Biréli Lagrènes recording Routes to Django (jazzpoint.de) - Live at the Crocodile with 1992 on the plate 10 Ans by Lydie Auvray .

From 1984 he made his own recordings. With Meggi Patay (solo guitar), Banschi Lehmann (double bass), Guggeli Wagner (rhythm guitar) and Holzmanno Winterstein (rhythm guitar and piano) he formed the Hot Club the Zigan and subsequently recorded three albums. With this formation he also played at the Midsummer Festival in Minnesota , USA. In the following years the line-up changed several times around him. Today Helmut Weis (piano), Jani Lehmann (double bass), Forello Reinhardt (guitar) and Mirano Kling (guitar) are represented in his ensemble. Weis, Lehmann and Reinhardt also played in the late Schnuckenack-Reinhardt quintet.

He lived in Haßloch in the Palatinate and ran a violin-making workshop in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse.

Awards

In 1991 he was made an honorary citizen of Minnesota by Governor Rudy Perpich .
