The Schneeberghütte ( Italian: Rifugio Monteneve ) is a refuge in the former mining area Schneeberg in the South Tyrolean part of the Stubai Alps .

Location and surroundings

The Schneeberghütte is located in the former Schneeberg mining area at an altitude of 2355  m . It is part of the old miners' village in a side valley that branches off to the north of Passeier . The closest settlement is Rabenstein , which belongs to the municipality of Moos in Passeier .

history

Silver , lead , copper and zinc blende have been mined on the Schneeberg for centuries . The Schneeberger Gasthaus in the miners' settlement of St. Martin was already used as a rifle hut in the 19th century . After the settlement was abandoned in 1967, the partially destroyed mansion was turned into a refuge, which the CAI took over the management . In 1995 the lease with the CAI expired. The state of South Tyrol, which as the owner had undertaken an extensive restoration of the buildings, made the South Tyrolean Mining Museum the new supporting organization. Since then, the mining museum has been organizing the leasing of the building and integrating the refuge into its visitor offers.

Tour possibilities

The side valley in which the Schneeberghütte is located, accessible by numerous marked hiking trails, is surrounded by mountain peaks in the west, north and east. The two highest of these are the Schneeberger Weißen ( 2963  m ) and the Schwarzseespitze ( 2988  m ). The Schneeberghütte also serves as a base for climbing the Botzer ( 3250  m ) a little further north , the highest mountain in the Stubai Alps south of the main Alpine ridge .

Heading northwest from the Schneeberghütte over the Karlscharte ( 2666  m ) and further over the Windachscharte ( 2845  m ) a transition to the North Tyrolean Siegerlandhütte ( 2710  m ) is possible. To the east, the Schneebergscharte ( 2682  m ) provides a connection to the inner Ridnauntal . The closest refuge there is the Grohmannhütte ( 2254  m ).
