The school campus includes a 5-class high school and a 4-class high school with associated open spaces for breaks, as well as a 4-field and 2-field sports hall with outdoor sports facilities. School operations began on February 26, 2018 with 1,250 students from the Tolkewitz grammar school, the 32nd secondary school and the Dreikönigschule grammar school at the site. The pupils of the Dreikönigschule grammar school are only taught temporarily on the Wehlener Strasse campus; the Tolkewitz school campus will be used as an outsourcing location for them during the renovation of their school building in the Äußere Neustadt .

The Tolkewitz school campus was built on the site of the former tram depot of the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB) by STESAD on behalf of the state capital Dresden. The overall project is based on a draft by ARGE Dresden-Tolkewitz, which was awarded 1st prize as a result of a Europe-wide award procedure and planning competition carried out in 2014 and was commissioned by STESAD with the further planning services. The members of the working group include the Zimmermann architectural community and the architectural office Raum und Bau from Dresden as well as the office Fuchs und Rudolph Architekten urban planners from Munich. In addition, other specialist planners from the areas of structural planning, technical building equipment and outdoor facilities were involved in the implementation of the school construction project as part of the working group.

After the land was acquired in April 2016 and the existing building stock was largely demolished, DVB handed over the cleared area to the municipal subsidiary STESAD in May 2016. After the start of construction in the summer of 2016, the preparatory civil engineering work was carried out and the shell construction began in September of the same year. After a particularly short overall construction period, the planned use could begin in February 2018. The construction costs of the school complex amounted to 68 million euros.

Based on the award-winning competition design, the school complex was built on the northern sub-area between Wehlener and Kipsdorfer Strasse as an L-shaped, single-storey building structure with two rectangular, 3-storey superstructures for a grammar school and high school. A second building complex is located south of Kipsdorfer Straße, consisting of a 4-field and 2-field sports hall with the adjoining outdoor sports facilities. The school campus was built according to the criteria of sustainability and was awarded the gold seal of approval in July 2019 according to the assessment system for sustainable building (BNB).

The official inauguration ceremony for the new school building took place on August 17, 2018 with the participation of the Lord Mayor of the state capital of Dresden, Dirk Hilbert .

architectural art

To promote art in public spaces and to enrich the area, a competition “Art in Architecture” was announced in April 2016 for the Tolkewitz school campus. The jury selected the entry “Locker um ABIZEUGNISMYTHOSWELT” by the artists Lutz-Rainer Müller from Leipzig and Stian Adlandsvik from Oslo as the winner. The work of art is a tape in flip-dot technology, which was attached to the north facade of the grammar school on Wehlener Straße. The system alternates between anagrams that were formed from the letters of the school ("TOLKEWITZ GYMNASIUM OBERSCHULE"). In the artistic justification for the competition entry, it says: "Playing with letters in the advertisement is to be seen as a metaphor for the school's mission to convey knowledge with joy and to make students curious about the world." In addition, the work aims to initiate the examination of the meaning and interpretation of words and addresses the constant development and change of language.

history

Tram tracks in front of the Tolkewitz school campus

The Tolkewitz school campus was built on the former site of the historic Tolkewitz tram station. In the course of the demolition from October 2015 to May 2016, listed building parts were secured, which were integrated into the new school campus in different ways and are reminiscent of the former use of the area. This includes the historic forecourt on Wehlener Strasse, the technical character of which has been preserved with the tram tracks and the natural stone paving that runs through it. The southern end of the forecourt used to be the gable wall of the car halls with their access gates. The location of the hall front was also retained and the new school complex was built on this historic edge of the square. The single-storey auxiliary building in the western part of the forecourt (former dispatcher building), however, was retained and was used for schools after the renovation. The entire square is under monument protection as a listed entity .

In addition, parts of the historic roof structure with lattice girders and cast iron supports were integrated into the open space for breaks. You can still guess the dimensions of the former car halls from them. Along the Kipsdorfer Straße, however, the southern outer wall of the street station was rebuilt as a free-standing gable wall with original components (gable cover and pillar template made of sandstone blocks).

In addition, the area of the former tram station also included the existing buildings along Schlömilchstrasse (residential / commercial building, former public bath and workshop building), the renovation / conversion of which has been carried out by an investor since 2016 and is expected to be completed in 2019.

With the construction of a new turning loop between the school campus and Schlömilchstraße, tram operations at the site will continue their historical use - albeit to a much lesser extent.

Transport links

The trams 4 and 6 of the Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe run along Wehlener Straße. A new track loop on the school campus was built by the Dresden transport company. Furthermore, the tram stop “Tolkewitz - Schulcampus” was set up on both sides in front of the school. The trams run every 10 to 15 minutes during school hours according to the inner-city cycle times.
