The Schwarzenberghütte (from 1904 to 1983 Mainzer Hütte ) is an Alpine Club hut of the Austrian Mountain Club of the ÖAV . The Category I shelter is located in the Glockner Group ( Austria ) south of the Great Wiesbachhorn .
history
The hut was built by the Alpenverein Austria of the DuOeAV in Vienna below the Hochgruberkees in 1882 and named after the first tourist climber of the Wiesbachhorn: Friedrich zu Schwarzenberg , cardinal and archbishop of Salzburg and Prague. Already in October of the same year it lost its roof in storms and was almost completely destroyed by avalanches in the winter of 1887/88 . The hut was then rebuilt by the Mainz section . The foundation stone was laid on August 31, 1895, and the inauguration took place in August 1897. In 1900 the hut was extended by an extension, but in 1904 the upper floor was again destroyed by avalanches. In the same year operations were resumed on the ground floor ( Alte Mainzer Hütte ) and in 1908 a new building followed a little below ( Neue Mainzer Hütte ). In 1944, the Mainz section sold the hut to the Austrian Mountain Association (ÖGV) in Vienna. The hut was also hit by avalanches in 1949 and 1951/52 and was becoming increasingly dilapidated. The ÖGV rebuilt it, the inauguration took place on September 7, 1986.
Ascent
The starting point is the large Ferleiten car park ( 1152 m ) at the toll station of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road near Fusch on the Grossglocknerstrasse . From here on the Käfertalweg heading south to the Vögerl-Alm. The well-marked trail begins behind the alpine hut and overcomes the 1000 meters of altitude in many hairpin bends to the Schwarzenberghütte.
