Vibrations

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vibrations was a German radio broadcast about electronic music . After a pilot episode in 1981, it was broadcast by Westdeutscher Rundfunk WDR from January 1984 to March 1995 . The program was hosted by the music journalist Winfrid Trenkler .

history

Trenkler has hosted the program "Rock In" on WDR 2 since the 1970s , in which he presented rock music outside the mainstream. Here he played for the first time those artists from the so-called Krautrock genre who mainly dealt with the then novel synthesizers , such as Klaus Schulze , Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel . But pieces by electronics pioneers such as Jean Michel Jarre and Kraftwerk have also found their way into the show.

In January 1984, Trenkler started his new program "Vibrations", which was initially broadcast every second Thursday. The title melody was “So far - so good!” From Harald Grosskopf's album “Synthesist”. In June 1986 he switched to WDR 1 together with both programs . After "Rock In" was discontinued in January 1988, "Vibrations" ran from now on every Thursday from 10:05 pm to midnight. In 1994, the theme music changed to the piece "Departure" from Michael Garrison's album "Eclipse".

The last program was broadcast at the end of March 1995, as there was no longer any slot for this format after the WDR program reform, which transformed WDR 1 into the new 1 Live .

Content and special events

In addition to the music and musicians that were often presented in great detail by Trenkler, there were also frequent guests in the studio for interviews . The individual pieces of music, which are known to go far beyond the usual song length in electronic music, were mostly played. Live concerts were also broadcast, such as the “Dome Event” with Klaus Schulze in Cologne .

At the end of each year, the “vibration elections” were held, in which the listeners could vote in the categories of best CD , best artist , best title and best newcomer . After the broadcast was discontinued, these elections were continued by the Förderverein Schallwende eV until 2006. The prizes for the election winners were handed over personally at an event that took place in the Technology Center in Duisburg until 2002 and was moderated by Trenkler. The last two events of this kind took place at Satzvey Castle in the Eifel , hosted by Lothar Lubitz from the music portal and label SynGate .

In addition to the award ceremony, Trenkler also organized four events called “Vibrations outside” in the 1990s, which was equivalent to a live performance of the program including interviews and music. The event took place for the first time on June 20, 1991 in the Hücker Moor , then twice at the Externsteinen (1991 and 1993) and most recently in the Mattlerbusch Revierpark in Duisburg (1996).

Vibrations - radio on CD

When the program was discontinued, Winfrid Trenkler began to publish the radio program as a monthly CD under the name "Winfrid Trenkler presents: Vibrations - Radio on CD". The first issue appeared as number 6/95 in June 1995 and started with around 1000 subscribers. The biggest difference to the radio broadcast was that the new format - due to the capacity of the medium - was not able to retain the full scope of the broadcast. So were z. B. just alluded to pieces. Trenkler and Erich Schauder were responsible for the production and distribution of the CDs.

Since the beginning of the third millennium, Winfrid Trenkler has gradually withdrawn from the project for health reasons, initially by handing over the editing to Joerg Strawe ( CUE Records ) and only moderating, and finally completely. After a few editions exclusively with music, Uwe Brameier took over the moderation for some CDs. Starting with issue 03/2005, the CD will appear in the format of a compilation .
