Scottish Grand Prix 1951
The Scottish Grand Prix (German: Grand Prix of Scotland ) was an automobile race that was held in 1951. It was advertised for Formula 1 , but had no World Championship status . It was the first and so far only Formula 1 race in Scotland .
background
The Scottish Grand Prix took place on July 21, 1951, a week after the Great Britain Grand Prix , which was the fourth World Championship round of the season at Silverstone .
The Scottish race took place without international participation. A total of 19 pilots registered for the race, all of them Scots, British or Irish.
Only four of the vehicles reported were Grand Prix or Formula 1 cars: These were the Maserati 4CLT from Philip Fotheringham-Parker , David Murray and Reg Parnell and the Alta from Joe Kelly . Archie Butterworth drove the AJB Special , an in-house construction developed primarily for hill climbs with a Steyr engine and gearbox and four-wheel drive. All other vehicles were racing or street sports cars from BMW , Healey or Jaguar .
Racetrack
A temporary course at the now closed Winfield Aerodrome in the Scottish community of Hutton ( Berwickshire ) served as a racing track . The 3.219 km long course had two straights, several hairpin bends and a few twists and turns . The race went over 50 laps; the total distance was 160.446 km.
Training and racing
Only 10 of the 19 registered drivers took part in training and the race. Seven drivers did not show up at all, Bill Black and Ron Flockhart were present but did not participate in training or the race.
The Formula 1 vehicles clearly dominated the qualification training. The four drivers with Formula 1 cars occupied the first four starting positions; Pole position went to Reg Parnell; Philip Fotheringham-Parker started from second place. Ian Stewart , who drove a Jaguar, was on the last grid position . For the race, pole sitter Parnell switched to an HWM with an Alta engine.
Already at the start, the drive shaft of Parnell's HWM broke , so that he retired before completing the first lap. Fotheringham-Parker then took the lead, which he did not give up until the end of the race. Second place went to the local racing driver Gillie Tyrer , who drove a BMW 328 . Only Fotheringham-Parker and Tyrer completed all 50 laps. Ian Stewart and Rob Dickson , who finished third and fourth, were each two laps behind, the fifth driver who crossed the finish line was six laps behind and was not classified because the distance was too short. All other drivers dropped out prematurely.
Joe Kelly drove the fastest race lap (1: 29.2 minutes, average speed 129.96 km / h).
