The Scottish Maid , a topsail clipper schooner (2 m), was launched on July 15, 1839 in Aberdeen , Scotland , on behalf of a shipping consortium under the direction of Alexander Nicol and George Munro, Aberdeen.

Their length-to-width ratio was "4.7: 1", which corresponds to that of a medium clipper. William Hall developed the hull lines empirically on a model in the tow tank . The ship had a slightly convex, so-called Aberdeen bow. The clipper schooner was used as a fast cargo sailor for the journey between Aberdeen or Leith and London (33 hours) in competition with liner steamers.
