The Seebad Binz is a former passenger ship that was built in 1957/1958 at the VEB shipyard “Edgar André” in Magdeburg-Rothensee for the VEB passenger ship “White Fleet” in Stralsund.

history

The "Seebad Binz" was delivered to VEB Fahrgastschiffahrt "White Fleet" in Stralsund in April 1958.

After German reunification , the ship was decommissioned and initially laid up in Rostock . It was then sold in September 1994. The ship, renamed “Cori”, was given the home port of Hamburg and was also transferred to Hamburg, but then remained for several years at various locations in the port of Hamburg .

After the death of the owner, the ship was sold to Turkey in 2010, but was not accepted due to financial problems. In October 2010 the ship was finally sold to Belgium. There it is to be used as an event ship under its old name “Seebad Binz”.

incident

In August 1961 there was an incident on board the ship in the course of which several people were arrested and, in some cases, sentenced to several years in prison.

On August 18, five days after the construction of the Berlin Wall began , the ship was on a journey from Wolgast to the Baltic Sea with around 250 people on board . The route "Bornholm Coast" should be used. However, after the weather deteriorated, the captain decided to continue the voyage off the sheltered coast of Rügen .

There were also ten members of the Young Community of Berlin-Schmöckwitz on board , who wrote the captain a message asking him to continue the voyage to Bornholm. The captain then informed the German border police via Rügen radio and headed for the port of Saßnitz on Rügen. The young community group was arrested there. The leader of the group, Dietrich Gerloff, and the son of the Schmöckwitz pastor at the time, Jürgen Wiechert, were sentenced eight days later as "ringleaders" to eight years' imprisonment each. The other youth in the group received sentences ranging from three months to two years. The two main accused were in October 1963 by the Federal Republic of Germany ransomed .

Technical specifications

The ship is of two six-cylinder - Diesel engine manufacturer VEB heavy machinery Liebknecht (type: SKL-6 NVD 36) with 540 hp power driven. It can reach a speed of up to 11  knots .
