Seiji Ogawa ( Japanese 小川 誠 二 , Ogawa Seiji ; born January 19, 1934 ) is a Japanese biophysicist . He is one of the pioneers of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Life

Ogawa graduated from Tokyo University in Tokyo , Japan with a bachelor's degree in applied physics in 1957 . From 1962 to 1964 he worked as a research assistant in the Radiation Research Laboratory at the Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . In 1967 Ogawa earned a Ph.D. from Stanford University in Stanford , California . in chemistry and stayed there as a postdoctoral fellow . In 1968 Ogawa moved to Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill , New Jersey , where he did his most important research. In 2001 he joined the Hamano Life Science Research Foundation in Tokyo as director of the Laboratory for Brain Function Research .

Act

Ogawa laid the foundations for a non-invasive, radiation-free visual representation of physiological and functional processes, especially of the brain, when, while searching for physiological signal changes in magnetic resonance imaging, he discovered the BOLD contrast , in which deoxygenated hemoglobin can be used as a contrast medium. The resulting methods of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and susceptibility-weighted imaging are the basis of numerous researches and clinical applications in biology , neurobiology , psychology and neurology .

Other merits of Ogawa lie in the in vivo nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic investigations of the relationship between the structure and function of proteins, cell metabolism and enzyme kinetics .
