His friend Jello (original title: Old Yeller ) is a film drama produced by Walt Disney Productions and directed by Robert Stevenson from 1957. The plot is based on the novel of the same name by Fred Gipson , who was awarded the Newbery Medal for this .
action
It is written in Texas in 1860 . 15-year-old Travis, his six-year-old brother Arliss and his mother have to look after the family farm because the father is absent for a long time to create a herd of cattle far across the country. Because this makes Travis the oldest “man” in the house, he feels responsible towards his mother and brother.
Reluctantly, he decides to take in a stray dog that has run into him. He gives it the name Jello.
One day when Arliss locates a young bear in the well and is attacked by the old bear, Jello saves the child's life. From now on the dog belongs to the family. A few days later, Travis is in danger when he is faced with a herd of young wild boars that are startled. Jello is there again and makes sure that nothing worse happens to the boy than an injury to his leg. However, the dog has suffered many wounds and needs - together with Travis - to be cared for by mother Katie.
A girl from the neighborhood visits the two patients and brings a little dog that is only a few days old as a gift that Jello is supposed to keep company.
Little by little, Jello is recovering from his injuries. But it doesn't take long before fate strikes again. To chase a stray wolf off the farm, Jello has to fight the wild animal and take several wounds. It soon becomes apparent that Jello contracted rabies during the fight. With a heavy heart Travis gives him the coup de grace.
The neighbour's little dog grows up quickly, and the older it gets, the more it resembles Jello. So the family can cope better with his death.
continuation
The film was continued in 1963 with the feature film In the Valley of the Apaches (Savage Sam) directed by Norman Tokar , in which the main human characters are captured by the Apaches and can be rescued with the help of Jello's son. Although Tommy Kirk, Kevin Corcoran and Jeff York re-impersonated their roles from His Friend Jello , the sequel did not achieve the same popularity.
