Blessed Gronemann

Selig Gronemann (born December 7, 1843 in Flötenstein , † March 6, 1918 in Hanover ) was a German rabbi .

Life

Blessed was the son of the businessman Samuel Gronemann . After attending school in Konitz , he studied at the University of Breslau and at the same time trained at the Jewish Theological Seminary . In 1869 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD.

As a rabbi, Selig first worked in Strasbourg (West Prussia) and Danzig . From 1883 to 1918 he was elected Hanoverian land rabbi and took over the care and supervision of the Jewish communities in both the administrative districts of Hanover and Lüneburg .

In the face of weakening religious ties, Gronemann campaigned for the preservation of Jewish religiosity: with the support of the authorities, he ensured that all children of Jewish families take part in Jewish religious education.

In the Hanover community, Gronemann worked in numerous associations and foundations. As chairman of the Hanoverian charity , he was in charge of funeral and cemetery affairs. Gronemann documented the older history of the Jews in Hanover , based on the grave inscriptions of the Old Jewish Cemetery on Oberstrasse . The "Committee for the Collection and Preservation of Jewish Antiquities" was founded on his initiative.

During the First World War , Selig Gronemann called for the care of the Jewish prisoners of war from Russia.

Gronemann was the father of Sammy Gronemann . His grave is in the Jewish cemetery An der Strangriede in Hanover's Nordstadt district .
