Serer (also Serer-Sine ) is an Atlantic language spoken by the Serer ethnic group in Senegal and Gambia .
The language is common in western Senegal and in the valleys of the Saloum and Sine rivers and in northwestern Gambia. It is spoken by around 1.2 million people, around 30,000 of whom live in Gambia.
Along with Diola , Wolof , Mandinka , Soninke and Fulfulde, Serer is one of the six national languages of Senegal.
Other languages, which are also known as Serer (e.g. Serer-Noon , Serer-Safen ) are not dialects but belong to the Cangin languages .
