Serge Lehman

Serge Lehman (actually Pascal Fréjean; born July 12, 1964 in Viry-Châtillon , Essonne department ) is a French writer, comic book author and critic, well-known and widely recognized as an author of science fiction . In addition to Serge Lehman, he used the pseudonyms Don Hérial , Karel Dekk , Robert Wolff and Corteval .

Life

Born on the southern edge of Paris, Lehman got to know the works of Jean Ray , Claude Seignolle and HP Lovecraft through his father at an early age . At the age of 10 he discovered science fiction for himself and developed a passion here that should always take precedence over his other interests, namely comics , films and rock music . In 1982, while still in high school, he and a friend from school started a biweekly program devoted to the first popular media on a communist FM station , which was broadcast for two years and through which he met some of the most famous comic book authors of those years, including Frank Margerin , Yves Frémion and Chantal Montellier . Together with this friend he published a first short story in 1984 in the Fanzine Continuum . This success encouraged him to take a break after the Hypokhâgne (the first year of preparation for studying literature at an ENS ) and work in the Latin Quarter at the science fiction bookstore Temp futurs, founded by Stan and Sophie Barets . He then went on to study, however, and a lecture on the history of science at the Sorbonne provided him with the material for his first novel La guerre de sept minutes , which appeared in two volumes in 1990 under the pseudonym Don Hérial by Fleuve Noir . In 1995 he won both the Prix Rosny aîné and the Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire , two of the most important French genre prizes, with the story Dans l'abîme . Lehman is now the author of a good dozen novels and almost 80 short stories. He has also edited several anthologies, including Chasseurs de chimères, l'âge d'or de la science-fiction française , which won the 2007 Prix Bob Morane .

The novel FAUST , the first volume in a trilogy, won the Prix Rosny aîné, the Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire and the Prix Ozone in 1997 . It takes place in the year 2095, when real power is no longer in the hands of elected politicians, but rather large corporations and a board of directors of these economic powers are preparing to establish totalitarian global rule. A secret alliance of scientists, intellectuals, diplomats and spies, including the father of the protagonist Chan Coray, a young man who is drawn into power struggles and machinations, is opposed to this unrestrained striving for power of a global capitalist apparatus.

Lehman is also a well-known comic book scenarist . Together with Jean-Marie Michaud, he created the SF comic series La Saison de la Coulœuvre from 2007 . For the SF comic series La Brigade Chimérique (together with Fabrice Colin , drawings by Gess ) he was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire in 2011 . He worked with Philippe Druillet on the 2020 sequel Babel of Druillet's Lone Sloane saga. He also wrote the screenplay for Immortal - New York 2095: The Return of the Gods , the film adaptation of Enki Bilal's SF comic trilogy about Alexander Nikopol .
