Sergio Mariotti

Sergio Mariotti (born August 10, 1946 in Florence ) is an Italian chess player with the title of International Grand Master .

Mariotti won the Italian youth individual championship in 1965. In 1969 he became individual master among adults and achieved the title of international master . In 1971 he won the national individual title again and achieved his first grandmaster norm. In 1974 he won a bronze medal at the Chess Olympiad in Nice as a single player on the first board in Final B. Overall, he took part in four Chess Olympiads between 1972 and 1988 . In 1974 he received the title of Grand Master. This made him the first Italian to do so since the title was introduced in 1950.

In 1976 he reached the interzonal of Manila . There he finished tenth, tied with Boris Spasski , Florin Gheorghiu and Wolfgang Uhlmann .

For professional reasons, he subsequently reduced the number of his tournaments. From 1994 to 1996 he was President of the Italian Chess Federation. He later worked as a supervisor for the national team. Mariotti played club chess for the GS Banco di Roma team , with whom he took part in the European Club Cup four times between 1976 and 1986 , and later for the CS Surya Montecatini , with whom he took part in the 1998 European Club Cup.

Mariotti's Elo rating is 2291 (as of August 2016), his highest rating of 2495 he reached in January 1975.
