Luca Moroni Jr. (born July 1, 2000 in Desio ) is an Italian chess player .

Life

Moroni learned the rules of chess when he was six. His first chess club was the Ceriano Laghetto club , which also promoted his talent. As a 13-year-old he won the national championship title and then various national youth titles. In 2015 he was runner-up behind Roven Vogel at the U16 youth world championship in Porto Carras . In the following year he played for Italy for the first time at the 2016 Chess Olympiad in Baku and achieved an excellent result on the reserve board (+5 = 4 −1). In the same year he was awarded the title " International Master ".

In December 2017, Moroni won the Italian championship in Cosenza . As a 17-year-old, he was the second youngest Italian after Fabiano Caruana to have achieved this. In the same year he was awarded FIDE the Grandmaster title , as he this year the required Elo rating exceeded 2,500 points. He achieved the norms for the title at the Italian championship in 2015 and at the Chess Olympiad in Baku. In the German Bundesliga , Moroni has been playing for Schachfreunde Berlin since 2019 .

Since there is another FIDE-listed player in Italy with the name Luca Moroni (* 1962), Grandmaster Moroni is referred to as Moroni Jr.
