Fabiano Caruana was the only Italian player to achieve an Elo rating above 2700 .

The list of Italian chess players contains chess players who are or were eligible to play for the Italian Chess Federation and who meet at least one of the following conditions:

Winner of one of the following FIDE titles: Grand Master , Honorary Grand Master , International Master , Grand Master of Women , Honorary Grand Master of Women, International Master of Women;
Holder of one of the following ICCF titles: Grand Master, Honored International Master, International Master, Grand Master of Women, International Master of Women;
Winning a national individual championship
a historical Elo rating of at least 2500 (before the Elo rating was introduced in July 1971).

General

In local chess, 14 grandmasters, 43 international masters (including three women with Marina Brunello , Elena Sedina and Olga Zimina ), 3 women's grandmasters and two international women's champions are eligible to play for the Italian Chess Federation. Three grandmasters, two international masters and one international female master are no longer eligible to play for the Italian Chess Federation, three honorary grandmasters, eight international masters and one international female master have already passed away.

In correspondence chess, 17 Italian players have acquired the title of Grand Master, 33 that of an Honored International Master, 46 that of an International Master (including Alessandra Riegler as the only woman ), 3 that of a Women's Grand Master and 4 that of an International Women's Master. Of these, two Grand Masters and three International Masters have already passed away. Fabio Finocchiaro won the 25th World Correspondence Chess Championship, Alessandra Riegler the sixth World Correspondence Chess Championship for women. The European correspondence chess championships were won by Bela Toth , Alfio Scuderi , Giampiero David , Ugo Fremiotti , Gabriel Cardelli and Ettore D'Adamo .

The Italian individual championship was played 78 times and the Italian women's championship 45 times. Record champion is Stefano Tatai with twelve titles, Rita Gramignani won the women's competition with nine titles the most.

Another four Italian players had a historic Elo rating of over 2,499 before June 1971.
