Sergiu Balan (also Serghei Balan ; born August 15, 1987 in Chișinău ) is a Moldovan biathlete .

Sergiu Balan lives and trains in Chișinău and starts for the local army sports club. He has been running biathlon since 2000 and is trained by Nadejda Bria. The student contested his first international race in the context of the Junior World Championships 2005 in Kontiolahti and was 74th of the sprint. Since the 2005/06 season he also competes in the Junior European Cup. The highlight of 2006 was the Junior European Championships, in which Balan took part in Langdorf without achieving any results worth mentioning. At the 2007 Junior World Championships in Martell , the athlete only achieved results beyond 80th place. He ran his third and last Junior World Championships in 2008 in Ruhpolding , where he placed similarly to last year's results. Also at the Junior European Championships shortly afterwards in Nové Město na Moravě Balan only placed in the back places.

At the Summer Biathlon World Championships 2008 in Haute-Maurienne Balan joined the mixed relay and was sixth with Natalja Levtschenkowa , Alexandra Camenșcic and Victor Pînzaru . He has been competing in the men's IBU Cup since the 2008/09 season . After he was 119th in his first sprint in Obertilliach , he stabilized his results in the 70s and 80s ranks in the following period. In Osrblie he even just missed the first point wins with low 40 placements. The highlight of Balan's first men's season was participation in the 2009 Biathlon World Championships in Pyeongchang , where a 91st place in the individual was comparatively good and he was also 105th in the sprint.

Balan also occasionally takes part in cross-country skiing competitions, mostly in the cross-country alpine cup or national championships. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin Balan was part of Moldova's squad for the cross-country sprint, but was not used. He also started at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , where he finished 100th in the sprint competition.
