Vegetative characteristics

Sesleria robusta is a perennial herbaceous plant . It forms a significant "rootstock" a Horst . The branching occurs extravaginally and intravaginally . The upright stalks have a length of 20 to 60 centimeters with a diameter of about 2 millimeters and are unbranched.

The leaf sheath largely forms a tube and is bare. The ligule is 0.5 millimeters long and membranous. The leaf blade is flat or folded, 20 to 40 centimeters long and 3 to 4.5 millimeters wide. The blade is slightly hairy. The spider tip is pointed or pointed.

Generative characteristics

The annual inflorescence is elongated with a length of 3 to 5.5 centimeters and a diameter of 0.7 to 0.9 centimeters. The inflorescence stem has a husk-shaped appendix at the tip, which is interpreted as a sterile spikelet. There are sterile and fertile spikelets . The fertile spikelets contain three fertile flowers . The spikelets are elongated with a length of 5 to 6 millimeters and laterally compressed. They break off at maturity. The husks are persistent, similar to each other and reach the tip of the spikelets. The hermaphrodite flowers contain three stamens and an ovary with two stigmas.

The fruit is a caryopsis with an attached pericarp , the hilum is elliptical.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28 or 42.

Occurrence

It grows in the old Mediterranean areas of the Dinarides in south-eastern Europe . Here it populates the upper rocky areas such as in Orjen and parts of central Prokletije . The species-rich composition also includes many endemics .
