Seventeen ( Korean 세븐틴 , stylized spelling SEVENTEEN or SVT ) is a South Korean boy group founded by Pledis Entertainment in 2015 .
The group consists of 13 members who are divided into three subgroups. Each of these three subgroups specializes in a creative area: a 'Hip-Hop Unit' which specializes in rap and hip-hop, the 'Vocal Unit' which focuses more on singing and the 'Performance Unit' which specializes in specializes in the band's choreographies . So far they have released two studio and four mini albums.
Since their debut, the members of the group have been heavily involved in setting up and producing the choreographies and music and are therefore referred to as a self-producing idol group . Seventeen's official fan club name is Carat .
history
Emergence
In 2013 the series “Seventeen TV” was broadcast on UStream, a video streaming service. The series showed, over several seasons, how Seventeen were preparing for their debut. At the beginning it wasn't clear who would become a member of Seventeen. All participants had to go through various training and selection processes in order to become permanent members of the group in the end.
In May 2015, the TV station MBC broadcast the series “Seventeen Project: Big Debut Plan”, which accompanied the group until their official debut.
2015: Debut with 17 Carat and Boys Be
On May 26, 2015, Seventeen officially debuted in the live broadcast final episode of the series "Project Seventeen: Big Debut Plan". On May 29th the first mini-album 17 Carat was released together with the single Adore U ( 아낀다 ) . 17 carat climbed to number 4 on the Gaon Album Charts.
On September 10, the group released their second mini-album Boys Be and the single Mansae ( 만세 ) . Boys Be became a huge success. The album reached # 2 on the Gaon Chart and made it to # 1 on the Billboard World Albums Chart.
2016: Love & Letter and Going SEVENTEEN
On April 25, 2016 Seventeen released their first studio album Love & Letter and the single Pretty U ( 예쁘다 ) . Love & Letter became the group's first number one album in Korea. On July 4th, the album was released under the name Love & Letter Repackage Album with five additional tracks along with the single Very Nice ( 아주 Nice) . This version of the album also reached number 1 on the Gaon Charts.
On December 5th, the group released their third mini-album "Going Seventeen" and the single Boom Boom ( 붐붐 ) .
2017: Al1 , World Tour and Teen, Age
On May 22, 2017, Al1 , Seventeen's fourth mini-album, was released along with the single Don't Wanna Cry ( 울고 싶지 않아 ) . Al1 reached number 1 on the charts and sold more than 190,000 copies in the first week, which was a new record for 2017.
From July on, Seventeen went on a world tour. Under the name "Seventeen 1st World Tour Diamond Edge" they gave 13 concerts, including in Canada and the USA.
On November 6th, the group's second studio album , Age, was released along with the single Clap ( 박수 ) .
On November 10th, Pledis Entertainment announced that The8 could no longer take part in the full promotion of the new album due to back problems. Especially at appointments such as fan meetings, he would not be there to protect his back and recover quickly.
2018: Director's Cut and Japan debut
The8 was there again at a fan meeting on February 2, 2018 and announced that he had recovered from his back problems and that he would now be able to participate in all of the group's activities again.
On February 5th, the album Director's Cut was released along with the single Thanks ( 고맙다 ).
At a concert in Japan on February 22nd, the group announced that they would soon make their debut in Japan. On May 30, the group officially debuted with the mini-album We Make You and the single Call Call Call! in Japan.
On July 16, Seventeen's fifth mini-album, You Make My Day, was released along with the single Oh My! ( 어쩌나 ) in South Korea.
