Severus Christoph Olpius

Severus Christoph Olpius also: Olp, Olpe, Olpio (born October 22, 1623 in Eisenach ; † January 13, 1673 in Römhild ) was a German moral philosopher and Lutheran theologian .

Life

Olpius was born as the son of Eisenach archdeacon Christoph Olp (born March 18, 1585 in Eisenach; † September 9, 1655 ibid.) And his wife Margaretha (born July 15, 1587 in Eisenach; born February 8, 1647 ibid.), Daughter of the rector of the school in Eisenach Valentin Weinrich (* 1553 in Steina; † September 26, 1622 in Eisenach), born.

From 1639 he grew up with the Counts of Farnroda and on May 27, 1641 he moved to the Gotha high school . After falling ill in early 1644, he left the high school there on April 5, 1641. On May 15, 1644 he moved to the University of Jena , where he first completed studies at the philosophical faculty. For this purpose he attended the lectures on moral philosophy with Philipp Horst , on logic and metaphysics with Daniel Stahl , on the Hebrew language with Paul Slevogt , on physics with Johann Zeisold and on history with Johann Christfried Sagittarius . On September 6, 1644 he was awarded the bachelor's degree and on March 22, 1647 the academic degree of master's degree in philosophy.

He then completed theological studies with Johannes Major , Gottfried Cundisius , Johannes Musaeus and Johannes Tobias Major , worked as a private tutor and took part in the lectures at the Jena University. After he had rejected his father's substitute and a high school professorship in Coburg, he became professor of poetry and extraordinary professor of morality at the Salana on January 16, 1656 . During this activity he also took part in the organizational tasks, so he was dean of the philosophical faculty and in the summer semester of 1663 was rector of the alma mater . In 1665 he was appointed superintendent in Römhild and in 1668 Olpius obtained his theological doctorate under Sebastian Niemann in Jena.

After suffering several health problems, he died at the age of forty-nine. His body was buried on January 19th of that year in the Römhilder collegiate church.

Olpius was married twice.

His first marriage was on August 25, 1656 in Jena with Rebecka Wallich (* April 27, 1637 in Jena † May 3, 1669 in Römhild), the daughter of the Jena school principal and deacon Johannes Wilhelm Wallich (* August 3, 1591 in Weimar ; † January 28, 1656 in Jena) and his wife Katharina Kühn (born June 10, 1600 in Weimar; † September 12, 1677 in Jena). The marriage resulted in six children, of whom a daughter and two pairs of twins were born. The children are known to include the daughter Katharina Rebecka Olpius († young), Johannes Christoph Olpius († February 20, 1672 in Römhild), Theodosius Johannes Olpius († 1670 Römhild) and the only son Christian Ernst Olpius who survived the father.

Olpius got his second marriage on February 7, 1671 in Römhild with Anna Dorothea Seifart (* Coburg), the daughter of the general superintendent of Coburg Tobias Seifart (* November 11, 1608 in Weißenfels; † April 10, 1664 in Coburg) Third wife Anna Ursula Körner, the daughter of the mayor of Coburg Andreas Körner (born March 1, 1598 in Coburg; † May 16, 1660 ibid.). In the marriage, a son was born on July 15, 1672 in Römhild, who died immediately after the emergency baptism.
