Sex and Breakfast is an American comedy film from the year 2007 . Directed by Miles Brandman , who also wrote the script.

action

At its core, the film is about two young couples with sexual problems that they want to solve by swapping partners, but instead have to think about the other way to get their relationship going again. For the couple Ellis ( Kuno Becker , including the trilogy Goal! ) And Renee ( Eliza Dushku , known as "Faith" from Buffy ), it is primarily boredom - which they try to cover up with skydiving, for example - that inhibits their love life. Renee also has unrealized lesbian fantasies, as she admits. With James ( Macaulay Culkin , including Kevin at home ) and Heather ( Alexis Dziena , including Sharon Stone's daughter "Lolita" in Broken Flowers ), however, there are tangible problems - she has a problem with getting to orgasm . Both couples seek the services of the sex therapist Dr. Wellbridge ( Joanna Miles ), whose therapeutic approach consists in particular of promoting partner swaps and orgies.

The sex scenes themselves are comparatively short, rather the couples are shown talking to each other. This leads to a number of mishaps fueled by jealousy, confusion and insecurities. In the end, one couple rediscovers the value of love and the relationship, while the other couple's partnership falls apart.

Reviews

John Anderson wrote in Variety magazine on December 3, 2007 that the film features tortured conversation and less sex than the title suggests. The showing in only one cinema in Los Angeles seems to herald the death of "the whole affair" . The representations are good, especially those of the credible Alexis Dziena, those of the "charming" Eliza Dushku and those of the "charismatic" Kuno Becker. Other reviewers also aimed at the poor balance between the two equally important aspects in the title. In addition, an "almost endless series of bland, whining, nowhere-going conversations and throw-away sequences" was criticized, which ultimately lead to the inevitable sex meeting.

Stephen Farber wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on November 21, 2007 that the film made audiences yawn. It turns out to be "pompous" and "non-representational" . The traditional problems of US audiences with making sexual issues a topic would result in poor box office success. The few viewers who would “sneak into” the cinemas because of the title would be disappointed by the film because it doesn't show much skin. The actors are photogenic and play their one-dimensional roles well. The camera work is "pretty" ; the film sets are minimalist, but well chosen.

In contrast, the MTV reviewer praised the film for showing young adults behaving as adults, and that there were four talented actors who all had plenty of time on screen. Nevertheless, there are clear weaknesses in the script that would make it impossible for him to work out the motivations and motives of the characters.

The Rotten Tomatoes aggregator counted eleven professional reviews, of which only one was “fresh” and ten were “rotten”, which corresponds to a value of 9% on the “tomatometer”. The users themselves were much more benevolent: With around 4,100 comments (as of November 2018), 21% liked the film.

backgrounds

In early August 2006, it was announced that Macauley Culkin was starring in the film, his first relevant role since 2004's Saved! - The high school missionaries . The film was shot in Los Angeles in August and September 2006. After showing on November 2, 2007 at the American Film Market , the film has been shown in a Los Angeles movie theater since November 30, 2007. A DVD was released on January 22nd, 2008 in the USA.
