Shōshichi Kobayashi ( Japanese 小林 昭 七 , Kobayashi Shōshichi ; born January 4, 1932 in Kōfu in Japan ; † August 29, 2012 ) was a Japanese mathematician who dealt with differential geometry .

Live and act

Shōshichi Kobayashi studied at the University of Tokyo ( Bachelor's degree in 1953). In 1953/54 he was at the Universities of Strasbourg and Paris . In 1956 he received his doctorate from the University of Washington with Carl B. Allendoerfer ( Theory of connections ). He then worked at the Institute for Advanced Study from 1956 to 1958 . In 1957 Kobayashi was Research Associate at the University of Chicago (with Shiing-Shen Chern ) and in 1958/59 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). After he worked from 1960 as an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia , Kobayashi was 1962 Assistant Professor, 1963 Associate Professor and 1966 Professor at the University of California, Berkeley ; 1978 to 1981 he was chairman of the mathematics faculty.

Kobayashi was u. a. Visiting professor in Tokyo , at MIT, in Mainz (1966) and Bonn (1969, 1977/78). He was a Sloan Research Fellow from 1964 to 1966 and a Guggenheim Fellow from 1977 to 1978 . He was a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Japanese, French and Swiss mathematical societies. In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice ( pseudo-distances intrinsèques sur les espaces complexes ).

Shōshichi Kobayashi engaged in u. a. with transformation groups and the differential geometry of complex spaces. He is the author of several well-known textbooks.

In 1987 he received the Geometry Prize from the Japanese Mathematical Society .
