geography
The village of Shaldon is on the southern bank of the estuary of the River Teign . The Civil parish of Shaldon includes the village of Shaldon and the west (upstream) village of Ringmore. The northern border of the Parish follows the river bank, and the eastern border is formed by the English Channel , with a long narrow strip of the district stretching like a trunk along the coast to the south, where it meets Torbay for a few hundred meters . To the west, south, and southeast, Shaldon shares a border with Stokeinteignhead . The village forms with this place a large part of the constituency Shaldon , which had a population of 2465 in 2011.
history
Shaldon was once part of the Hundred of Wonford . The original settlement was upstream in Ringmore, where farming was possible in the valley and the villagers were better protected from the rigors of the sea. Up until the beginning of the 20th century, Ringmore had numerous functioning farms, with extensive orchards with apples and other products, including cider apples, watercress and willows whose rods were used to make lobster traps . There were also shipyards on the bank for building and repairing boats.
Shaldon itself is built on reclaimed land , a dike built around 1800 is supposed to prevent the river from reaching its former banks.
administration
Shaldon belongs since 1974 to the Teignbridge district , which was created on the basis of the Local Government Act 1972 . Previously, Shaldon was part of St Nicholas Parish, which also included parts of the neighboring village of Ringmore. Since 1881 Shaldon and the surrounding area belonged to the Teignmouth Urban District.
regatta
The regatta , which has been held since at least 1817, is one of the oldest of its kind in England. Today's nine-day event takes place every August.
Homeyards Botanical Gardens
On a hill above the village are the gardens, which were laid out in the late 1920s and early 1930s by Maria 'Laetitia' Kempe Homeyard and whose structures were built by Thomas Rider. They consist of an informally laid out arboretum with a high path that provides a view of the Estuary of the River Teign and the chalk coast. The botanical garden was first opened to the public in 1955 and is open all year round. The Teignbridge District Council takes care of its maintenance.
