Shehan Abeypitiya (born January 17, 1990 in Colombo ) is a Sri Lankan athlete who specializes in sprinting .

Athletic career

Shehan Abeypitiya gained his first international experience at the 2009 World Youth Championships in Ostrava , where he reached the quarter-finals over 100 meters and was disqualified over 200 meters in the preliminary run. He then won gold over 100 meters in 10.69 s at the South Asian Junior Championships in Colombo . In 2008 he won the silver medal over 100 meters at the Junior Asian Championships in Jakarta . He then took part in the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz , where he finished seventh in 10.71 seconds over 100 meters and was eliminated over 200 meters in the semifinals. At the end of the year he won the gold medals in the 100 and 200 meters at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune .

In 2009 he finished fourth at the Lusophony Games in Lisbon , over 100 and 200 meters, and also qualified over 100 meters for the World Championships in Berlin , where he was eliminated with 10.53 seconds. This was followed by participation in the Asian Championships in Guangzhou , where he finished sixth over 100 meters and was eliminated over 200 meters in the semifinals. In 2010 he won the gold medal over 100 meters and silver over 200 meters at the South Asian Games in Dhaka . He also took part in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi for the first time , where he reached the semi-finals over 100 meters and the quarter-finals over 200 meters.

In 2011 he finished sixth at the Asian Championships in Kobe over 200 meters and was eliminated over 100 meters in the semifinals. He then took part in the World Military Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he reached the semi-finals over 100 and 200 meters. With the Sri Lankan 4 x 100 meter relay, he won the bronze medal in 40.02 s. In 2015 he took part with the relay again at the Asian Championships in Wuhan and finished fourth in 39.38 s. In 2016 he won the gold medal with the relay at the South Asian Games in Guwahati . In 2017 he took part in the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar and again finished fourth in the relay.

In 2018 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast for the second time and finished sixth with the Sri Lankan relay with a new national record of 39.08 seconds.

In 2009 Abeypitiya became Sri Lankan champion over 200 meters.
