Shinichi Shinohara ( Japanese 篠 原 信 一 , Shinohara Shin'ichi ; born January 23, 1973 in Hiranai , Aomori Prefecture ) is a former Japanese judoka . He won an Olympic silver medal and two world titles.

Athletic career

The 1.90 m tall Shinichi Shinohara was second in the heavyweight division at the Tournoi de Paris in 1994, behind the Estonian Indrek Pertelson , and in 1995 Shinohara won the final against the French David Douillet . At the 1995 World Championships in Chiba, he was defeated in the open class in the semifinals to the Russian Sergei Kossorotow , by defeating the Belgian Harry Van Barneveld , Shinohara won a bronze medal. A month and a half after the World Championships, Shinohara won the Asian Heavyweight Championships. At the 1996 Olympic Games, Naoya Ogawa competed for Japan in the heavyweight division.

In 1997 Shinohara won the heavyweight division at the Paris World Cup. At the 1997 World Championships in Paris , Shinohara reached the final and was defeated by the French David Douillet. At the Asian Games in 1998 Shinohara won the heavyweight final against the Iranian Mahmoud Miran . The following year, David Douillet was absent from the World Championships in Birmingham due to a back injury. Shinohara defeated the Turkish Selim Tataroğlu in the heavyweight quarter -finals, the French Jérôme Dreyfus in the semifinals and the Estonian Indrek Pertelson in the final. In the open class he won in the semifinals against the Belgian Harry Van Barneveld and in the final against Selim Tataroğlu. Shinohara was thus double world champion like Douillet in 1995.

At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney Shinohara defeated the Russian Tamerlan Tmenow in the semifinals by Ippon, in the other semifinals Douillet won against Indrek Pertelson also by Ippon. In the final fight between Shinohara and Douillet there was a contentious decision when both fighters went down at the same time during a throw by the French. The judges mostly counted the action in favor of the French, who thereby won the gold medal. At the 2001 World Championships in Munich, Shinohara lost to the Russian Alexander Michailin in the quarter-finals of the heavyweight division . Shinohara once again won a bronze medal by winning the round of hope over Jérôme Dreyfus, the Germans Andreas Tölzer and Indrek Pertelson.

Shinichi Shinohara was later active as a judo trainer, in the 2010s he appeared frequently on television and acted in cameo roles in films.
