Shivnarine Chanderpaul (born August 16, 1974 in Unity Village , Demerara-Mahaica , Guyana ) is a retired cricketer .

Career

He plays in Test Cricket and One-Day International Cricket Matches (ODI) for the West Indies team . In 2008 he was named both ICC Player of the Year and one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year . So far, Shivnarine Chanderpaul has participated in 140 tests for the West Indies team, scoring 10,055 runs. Along with his former teammate Brian Lara, he is one of only ten players who achieved more than 10,000 runs in tests. His Test debut was against England in March 1994 in Georgetown, Guyana. He has also played 268 One-Day Internationals for the West Indies so far, scoring 8,778 runs. He played his first one-day international match in Faridabad against India on October 17, 1994. With the West Indies team, Chanderpaul has participated in five cricket world championships ( 1996 , 1999 , 2003 , 2007 and 2011 ). On January 23, 2016, he announced his retirement from international cricket.
