History of origin

Work on Shrink began in March 1997. Before that, Martin Gretschmann joined the band as a permanent member and from then on was responsible for the electronics. For the album they teamed up with the producer team Galore (Mario Thaler and Olaf Opal). The recordings took place in the Uphon Studio in Weilheim and were repeatedly interrupted by tours. The album was released in Germany in May 1998, and the album was released internationally on September 18, 1998. However, Notwists US record company went bankrupt, so that the album was only released in the United States on July 22, 2003.

Music and meaning

Shrink is widely seen as a big step in the band's development. It stands out because of its no longer punk style , but rather influenced by influences from electronica , ambient and jazz . Although this step was already taken with the previous album 12 , the electronic and jazzy elements of the music have now been refined. In fact, Adrien Begrand compares PopMatters.com of innovation with the album Kid A by Radiohead and speculates about how great The Notwist 1998 could have been if their US would not bankrupt gone record company. The critics in both the United States and Germany in particular praised the album as very innovative and groundbreaking in 1998, while the fans initially kept their distance.
