Shutter - you see (original title: Shutter ) is an American horror - thriller from 2008 directed by Masayuki Ochiai and the remake of the Thai film Shutter from the year of 2004.

action

Ben and Jane from New York City just got married. Shortly after their wedding, they both fly to Japan, where the professional photographer Ben has received a new assignment. Once in Japan, they drive to a remote hut near Mount Fuji in order to spend their shortened honeymoon in advance. In the dark, a young woman suddenly appears on the road, wearing only a light dress despite the snowfall. Jane cannot avoid her and runs over her with the car. When they both look, however, the woman has disappeared and the police cannot find any leads. Ben has had pain in his neck since the accident.

At Ben's client in Tokyo , the couple got an apartment directly above Ben's new photo studio with darkroom. When they developed their honeymoon photos, strange white streaks appear on them, which can later also be seen on Ben's professional photos. When Jane later the young woman from the accident appears with a skull face in the window of the Tokyo subway, she no longer believes that she just imagined the accident, but Ben doesn't want to know about it and decides.

Jane tries to solve the riddle on her own. When she looks through Ben's pictures again, she notices that all streaks point to the 17th floor of a high-rise building. There she finds the photo of the woman and her name Megumi Tanaka in an office, as well as the information that Ben was the photographer. Confronted with this, Ben admits that he knew the woman. He had a relationship with her when he was in Japan earlier, but one day he left her.

Ben's former work colleagues and friends Adam and Bruno are also haunted by Megumi. Adam dies after his eye is torn out and Bruno commits suicide by jumping out the window. Ben and Jane go to Megumi's house, where they discover that Megumi has long been dead and had committed suicide with potassium cyanide . The corpse now receives a proper burial ceremony and is cremated. Ben and Jane now believe that it is all over and fly back to New York City.

There, Jane discovers clues from Megumi in photos that were taken before her departure, which she leads to a camera in Ben's suitcase. When she looks at the photos from the memory card, she finds a series of images that show Megumi being physically harassed by Adam and Bruno. When she confronts Ben about this, he confesses to her that the three friends planned to take compromising photos of Megumi after they secretly administered sleeping pills to make Megumi blackmailable. Adam and Bruno then went on and raped her, while Ben watched inactive.

Jane is horrified and explains that she does not want to live with someone like that and leaves Ben. Ben now takes photos all over the apartment to find out where Megumi's ghost is now. When he finds no clues and throws the camera on the floor, it takes a picture of Ben. This shows that Megumi has apparently been sitting on Ben's shoulders the whole time, which explains his constant neck pain, the bent posture and his unusually high weight.

In order to get rid of Megumi for good, he electrocuted his neck. He survived this with serious injuries. In the hospital he is now sitting motionless on his bed, leaning forward. When the door swings open, Ben is reflected in it and you can see Megumi still holding on to him.

Reviews

“This look at the truth, this suspense in the Hitchcock 's sense, that the viewer knows more than the protagonists of the film -" Shutter "only succeeds in this trick sometimes. Instead, director Ochiai uses this remedy for cheap - and predictable - shock effects, for a badly prepared "boo!", Which on top of that is usually not even relevant to the plot. The clever premise of the original, which was always able to justify its horror with the parable-like story, pushes "Shutter" into the background all too quickly and prefers to devote itself to the mistrust between Western and Eastern culture. "

- Matthias Huber - Telepolis

"Routinely staged remake of a Thai horror film (Shutter, 2004), which does not even begin to illustrate the truly threatening aspects of the subject."
