Siegfried Josef Bauer (born September 13, 1930 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian space researcher and emeritus full professor at the University of Graz .

Life

Siegfried J. Bauer grew up in Griffen ( Carinthia ) and graduated from the Stiftsgymnasium St. Paul im Lavanttal in 1948 . From 1948 to 1953 he studied physics , geophysics and meteorology at the University of Graz and received his doctorate in 1953 with a dissertation on ionospheric research under Otto Burkard . After completing his doctorate , he emigrated to the USA as part of the military project " Paperclip " and worked at the US Army Signal Research and Development Laboratory in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey , until 1960 . His research areas included weather radar , sferics , analysis of the ionospheric effects of hurricanes and atomic bomb explosions , as well as studies of the earth's ionosphere with the Diana lunar radar .

In 1961 he moved to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center , where he was engaged in researching the ionospheres of Earth, Venus and Mars with the help of rockets and satellites. He held a number of management positions, including a. as head of the department for ionospheric and radio physics and most recently as deputy director of science. In 1981 he was appointed full professor of meteorology and geophysics at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz , where he worked until his retirement in 1998, for a period also as dean of the natural science faculty. At the same time he was department head and deputy director of the Graz Institute for Space Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Siegfried Bauer is an expert in planetary aeronomy , which deals with atmospheric properties in the vicinity of the boundary with space, and is the author of over 165 scientific publications. He was also involved in experiments on the American Pioneer Venus and Mars Global Surveyor missions, as well as on the European Huygens probe , which landed on Saturn's moon Titan in 2005 as part of the Cassini mission .

The Austrian Federal President Heinz Fischer personally congratulated Bauer on his 85th birthday in a letter and praised his scientific achievements and contributions.

He was given a special honor by naming an asteroid. The International Astronomical Union named an asteroid discovered in 1991 after him, (73701) Siegfriedbauer .
