The Carina is a feeder vessel of Sietas type 137, only one copy was built by the. She was the world's first container ship with side-opening folding hatch covers .
history
The Carina was built with hull number 1001 at the Sietas shipyard in Hamburg-Neuenfelde . The keel was laid on March 23, 1989 and the launch on February 21, 1990. The ship was delivered on April 4, 1990.
The client for the construction of the ship was the shipping company H.-P. Wegener from Jork in the old country near Hamburg . Owner was the shipping partnership MS "Carina" Hans-Peter Wegener KG , bereedert the ship was Wegener Bereederungsges. mbH & Co. KG .
Although the ship is being chartered out to the Finnish operating company Ships-Cont Ltd. OY , better known as Containerships , was equipped with a folding hatch cover system from the manufacturer MacGregor that was built for the first time in the world and opened to the starboard side , which enabled loading with extra-wide and extra-long containers as well as a higher container capacity with the same ship length, this hatch system was not able to do so because of its inadequate structure Not enforcing flexibility in port calls in the feeder service. At the Sietas shipyard in Hamburg-Neuenfelde, however, additional feeder ships with conventional hatch cover systems were built, in which the loading layout was taken up again with regard to the variable stowage options of non-standard containers.
During the Containerships Charter, the ship operated as Containerships III . After the charter expired in 1999, it was renamed Carina again and continued to sail for the H.-P. Wegener . In early 2013 the ship was sold to the Polish Żegluga Gdańska and sailed under the Polish flag as Corina . The ship has been named Carina again since May 2018 . It has been sailing under the Dominica flag ever since .
Technical data and equipment
The ship is propelled by an eight - cylinder four - stroke diesel engine made by MaK with an output of 5400 kW , which acts on a variable-pitch propeller via a gearbox . It can reach a maximum speed of 17 knots . The ship is equipped with a bow thruster with an output of 500 kW.
A shaft generator with an apparent power of 1090 kVA , three diesel generators with an apparent power of 135 kVA each and an emergency generator with an apparent power of 40 kVA are available for the power supply.
The hull of the ship is reinforced with ice. For trips in ice-covered waters, it has ice class E3.
