Sigmar Wittig

Sigmar Wittig (born February 25, 1940 in Nimptsch , Lower Silesia ) is a German researcher and university professor, former rector of the University of Karlsruhe (TH) and from 2002 to 2007 chairman of the board of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). He is married and has two children.

Life

Sigmar Wittig studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University and received his doctorate in 1967.

This was followed by a nine-year stay in the USA. a. as an Associate Professor at Purdue University , West Lafayette.

In 1976 Sigmar Wittig was offered a position at the University of Karlsruhe (today the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology ) and took over the management of the Institute for Thermal Flow Machines .

Sigmar Wittig was appointed to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (since 1998), the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts .

He is an honorary doctor of the Technical Universities of Darmstadt , Budapest (Hungary), Ufa ( Russia ), Purdue University ( West Lafayette , USA) and the Aristotle University of Thessaloníki (Greece).

From 1994 to 2002 he was rector of the University of Karlsruhe and from 1996 to 1998 chairman of the state rectors' conference of Baden-Württemberg. From March 2002 to February 2007 he was Chairman of the Board of Management of DLR and head of the German delegation to the ESA Council and from 2005 to 2007 Chairman of the ESA Council. After relinquishing his chairmanship on March 1, 2007, he is again effective as professor emeritus at the Institute for Thermal Fluid Machines at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Memberships, prizes and awards

Sigmar Wittig is a member of various national and international supervisory boards, advisory boards and boards of trustees.

Wittig is a recipient of the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize of the Helmholtz Association , the Heisenberg Medal of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation , the R. Tom Sawyer Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany. Sigmar Wittig has been the holder of the L'Ordre national de la Légion d'Honneur ( Legion of Honor ) since 2006 . In 2013 he received the Aircraft Engine Technology Award .
