Sigmund Fraenkel (chemist)

Sigmund Fraenkel (born May 22, 1868 in Krakow , † June 7, 1939 in Geneva ) was an Austrian chemist and pharmacologist .

Life

Sigmund Fraenkel, son of Oskar Fränkel and his wife Regina, b. Horowitz, attended grammar school in Graz and then studied medicine at the universities of Vienna , Freiburg , Prague , Cambridge and Strasbourg . In 1892 he received his doctorate from the University of Vienna. He conducted research in the field of physiological chemistry and in 1904 became head of the laboratory of the Spiegler Foundation. In 1916 he became an associate professor for medicinal chemistry at the University of Vienna. Fraenkel undertook research trips to Asia, Africa and North America and mainly dealt with questions of physiological chemistry.

He was a social democratic member of the Vienna City Council from 1919 to 1927 and was involved in the construction of the Opponitz and Gaming hydropower plants .
