Sikander Bakht

Sikander Bakht (born August 24, 1918 in New Delhi ; † February 23, 2004 in Thiruvananthapuram , Kerala ) was an Indian politician of the Janata Party and later the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who was among other things foreign minister and later from 2002 to was governor of Kerala on his death .

Life

Local politician and Lok Sabha member

After attending school, Bakht studied social sciences at the University of Delhi and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). He then worked as a social worker.

He began his political engagement immediately after the sovereignty of Great Britain in 1947 as a special magistrate before he was a member of the city council of New Delhi from 1951 to 1952. He later served as Chairman of the New Delhi Electricity Company from 1967 to 1968 and was a member of the company's committee until 1970. At the same time he was from 1967 to 1971 of the New Delhi's Municipal Societies and from 1970 to 1971 a member of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Societies. Bakht, who was a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1969 and later the INC Organization (INC-O), was a member of the New Delhi City Council between 1972 and 1977.

Bakht was elected in the elections to Lok Sabha , the lower house of the Indian parliament , in 1977 and represented the constituency of Delhi-Chandni Chowk for the BJP during the sixth legislative period in 1979 .

Minister, Rajya Sabha Member and Governor

Bakht was appointed Minister of Works, Housing, Supply and Rehabilitation (Union Minister of Works, Housing, Supply and Rehabilitation) to Prime Minister Morarji Desai's cabinet in March 1977 and held this position until Desai's term of office ended in July 1979.

In April 1990 Bakht became a member of the Rajya Sabha , the upper house of the Indian Parliament , in which he represented Madhya Pradesh until April 2002 . During his membership of the House of Lords, he was first opposition leader in the Rayja Sabha from 1992 to 1998 .

On May 21, 1996 Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of the Bharatiya Janata Party appointed him Foreign Minister (Union Minister of External Affairs) , but only held this post for ten days, since Vajpayee had already been Prime Minister to HD Deve on June 1, 1996 Gowda from Janata Dal gave.

After Vajpayee became Prime Minister for the second time on March 19, 1998, Bakht took over the office of Union Minister of Industry in this government and was in this ministerial office until 1999. At the same time he acted from 1998 to 1999 as leader of the government in the upper house (Leader of the Rayja Sabha) and was then from 1999 to 2002 chairman of the trade committee of the Rayja Sabha.

For his longstanding political services, Bakht was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2000, the second highest Indian civilian merit after the Bharat Ratna .

On April 18, 2002, President K. R. Narayanan appointed him to succeed Sukhdev Singh Kang as governor of Kerala . He held the governorship of this state until his death on February 23, 2004. Two days later, Triloki Nath Chaturvedi became the new governor of Kerala on February 25, 2004.
