history

Old salt factory (built 1639)

Simmerberg was first mentioned in a document in 1393. In 1523 the Simmerberg court was sold to the Habsburgs by the County of Montfort . Until 1570 the place belonged to the monastery of St. Gallen . The so-called salt route , one of the most important traffic and trade routes in the Allgäu at the time, on which salt was transported from Tyrol via Immenstadt to Bregenz , Switzerland and as far as Baden , went directly through Simmerberg. In 1665 the chapel was built in the village. The Simmerberger brewery was founded in 1706. In 1783 Simmerberg is mentioned as the "main stacking place" for salt. In 1804 the market was named by Emperor Josef II of Austria due to the economic importance of Simmerberg . In 1805 the Church of St. Joseph was built. In 1806 Simmerberg was attached to the Kingdom of Bavaria through the Peace of Pressburg . On September 1, 1968, Simmerberg and Weiler in the Allgäu merged to form the Weiler-Simmerberg market.
