Simon III Saarbrucken († 1235 / 40 ) was from 1207 to 1235/40 Count of Saarbrücken . With his death, the older line of the Counts of Saarbrücken became extinct in the male line.

Life

Simon was a son of Count Simon II of Saarbrücken and his wife Liutgard von Leiningen († after 1239), daughter of Emich III. , Count of Leiningen. Simon succeeded his father as Count of Saarbrücken, his younger brother Friedrich inherited around 1220, after the Count of Leiningen died out , their possession and founded the younger line of this house. Heinrich , another brother, officiated as Bishop of Worms .

Simon supported the Staufers in the controversy for the succession to the throne . After the death of Philip of Swabia , he recognized Otto of Braunschweig as king, but was present at the coronation of Frederick II in Aachen in 1215 . In the following years he belonged to Frederick's close entourage.

In 1216 he committed himself to participate in the Fifth Crusade , in which he participated from 1217 to 1219 and in particular took part in the siege of Damiette .

After the crusade, in 1223, Simon donated the Martinskirche in Köllerbach to the Wadgassen Abbey .

After the death of his only son Dietrich, he signed a contract with the Metz bishop Johann von Apremont in 1227 , who secured the female succession in the county of Saarbrücken as a Metz fiefdom ; In return, he had to give the bishop the fief of parts of the county that were not previously Metz fiefs. However, this contract was challenged by Johann's successor Lorenz von Leistenberg in 1271, when Simon's daughter Mathilde succeeded her sister Laurette as Countess of Saarbrücken. The disputes lasted until after Mathilde's death, only her son Simon IV was able to secure the rule permanently and founded the Saarbrücken-Commercy family .

Also in 1227, Simon had the Kommende St. Elisabeth built in Saarbrücken as a branch of the Teutonic Order .
