Simon Rettenpacher

Simon Rettenpacher (also Rettenbacher ; born October 17, 1634 at the Gänsbrunn farm in Aigen near Salzburg ; † May 10, 1706 at the Kremsmünster Abbey ) was a Latin and German-speaking playwright, poet and chronicler.

Life

Rettenpacher studied history and law in Salzburg , Siena , Rome and Padua and became a member of the Benedictine order in 1660 . In 1664 he was ordained a priest. Until 1668 he studied oriental languages ​​in Rome. He was introduced to the collections by the head of the Vatican Libraries, Leone Allacci .

From 1668 Rettenpacher taught oriental languages ​​at the Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster , from 1671 to 1675 he was professor of history and ethics at the University of Salzburg , where he also directed the university theater. From 1675 to 1689 he worked as a monastery librarian in Kremsmünster, after which he was pastor in Fischlham .

In addition to Latin plays, for which he also composed the accompanying music in part, Rettenpacher wrote a German play, around six thousand Latin poems, “ German rhyming poems ” and theological and historical writings.
