Sinan Selenium

Sinan Selen (* 1972 in Istanbul ) is a German administrative lawyer and has been Vice President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) since January 21, 2019 .

Life

Selenium came to Germany with his parents, who were journalists for Deutsche Welle , at the age of four. He grew up in Cologne. As a schoolboy, he trained as a paramedic at the Johanniter Accident Assistance . Selen studied law at the University of Cologne with a focus on domestic and judicial policy as well as European / European law .

From 2000 he worked in the State Security Department of the Federal Criminal Police Office. There he was u. a. entrusted with the personal protection of the then Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and the Interior Minister Otto Schily . After the attempted bomb attacks on July 31, 2006 in Cologne, Selen led the search for the perpetrators. At the end of 2006 he became Head of the Terrorism and Extremism Division in the Counter Terrorism Unit of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI).

2009 he moved to the Federal police headquarters as the Permanent Representative of the Head of Unit Crime fighting, where he also issues counter-terrorism and piracy machined fighting. In 2012, Selen returned to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, where he worked in the Public Security Department on operational issues relating to the fight against terrorism. In this position he represented Germany in the Counter Terrorism Group of the G7. In addition, together with Emily Haber, he was responsible for cooperation with Turkey on counter-terrorism issues. From the Turkish citizenship selenium was dismissed at his request.

From 2016 until his appointment as BfV Vice President, he worked in the private sector at TUI . There he set up the group-wide security structure, which included the international coordination and interlinking of various parts of the group, the creation of uniform structures, standards and processes, in particular in the area of cybersecurity and crisis management, as well as vulnerability and risk analyzes in all processes of the group .
