Siraj Wahhaj

Siraj Wahhaj (originally Jeffrey Kearse , born March 11, 1950 in New York ) is a prominent American imam of Christian origin.

biography

Siraj Wahhaj grew up in the Brooklyn borough of New York . He converted from Christianity ( Baptists ) to Islam . He is the founder and imam of the Al-Taqwa Mosque in Brooklyn and the leader of the Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA; Muslim Alliance in North America). He was also the Vice President of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA). He first became famous for his successful efforts in the fight against drugs and crime in his neighborhood.

At first he belonged to the Nation of Islam in New York and was convinced during this time that the white devils were. After the death of Elijah Muhammad in 1975 he joined his son WD Mohammed , who urged the members of the Nation of Islam to turn to Orthodox Islam, and followed Sunni Islam . During his studies in Mecca in 1978, he immersed himself in the Koran .

He has served as a board member of the American Muslim Council (AMC).

As guest chaplain , Imam Siraj Wahhaj was the first Muslim to speak the opening prayer ( invocation ) in the US House of Representatives on June 25, 1991 , an event that was also widely recognized internationally.

The borough president of Brooklyn, Marty Markowitz , proclaimed on August 15, 2003, day of Siraj Wahhaj Day ( Siraj Wahhaj-tag ), in honor of his "lifelong outstanding and significant achievements."

In 2009 he was included in a "List of 500 Most Influential Muslims" by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center in Jordan and the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding in Washington, DC .

Positions

Wahhaj has made declarations in support of Islamic laws over those of liberal democracy . He also supports the death penalty of stoning for adultery and cutting off hands for theft. He is quoted with the following words: "Islam is better than democracy, [...] Allah will cause his deen [religion], Islam, to prevail over every kind of system, and you know what? It will happen." Also with: "If Allah says 100 strikes, 100 strikes it is. If Allah says cut off their hand, you cut off their hand. If Allah says stone them to death, through the Prophet Muhammad, then you stone them to death, because it's the obedience of Allah and his messenger — nothing personal. "

For Imam Siraj Wahhaj, our misguided foreign policy toward Israel is the greatest threat to America, and he asked why he couldn't criticize it publicly in America.
