Slater Nelson Martin Jr. (born October 22, 1925 in Elmina , Texas , † October 18, 2012 in Houston , Texas) was an American basketball player on the position of point guard .
Career
Martin started his NBA career with the Minneapolis Lakers in 1949 . He remained there for seven years and took in 1950 and 1952 - 1954 the NBA title. After a short detour to the New York Knicks , he moved to the St. Louis Hawks for the last four years of his career , with whom he was able to win the title again in 1958 .
Martin is considered one of the best defensive players of the 1950s. He was appointed to the NBA All-Star from 1953 to 1959 and was elected to the All-NBA Second Team from 1955 to 1959 . In his total of 745 matches as a player, he scored 7,337 points with 3,160 assists and 2,302 rebounds .
From 1967 to 1969, Martin coached the Houston Mavericks ABA team .
On May 3, 1982, Slater Martin was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .
