Primorska

  • Primorska (1) is one of the five historical regions of Slovenia.
  • Primorska (Slovenian coast) is a region in Slovenia , on the border with the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia . It stretches from the Slovenian Adriatic coast in the south to the Julian Alps in the north.

The region goes back to the former Habsburg crown land " Austrian coastal land ". Although the majority spoke Slovene, it fell to Italy as a result of the Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919 and became part of the newly formed region of Venezia Giulia ( Julian Veneto ). During the time of Italian fascism , the underground organization TIGR fought for annexation to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia . In 1945 part of the area came to the Free Territory of Trieste , while the uppermost Isonzo / Sontig / Soča came to Slovenia , which became a part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia . The northern part of the Free Territory of Trieste (Slovenian Svobodno tržaško ozemlje ) fell back to Italy in 1954 (formerly " Zone A "). The south (the former " Zone B ") was connected to what was then Yugoslavia : the majority of Istria to Croatia, the rest to Slovenia, where it forms the Primorska region with the upper Isonzo Valley, which fell to Slovenia in 1945.

According to the statistical regions of Slovenia , the area is partly in the Goriška regija (Gorizia) and partly in the Obalno-kraška regija (coastal area and karst).

The center of the Primorska region is Nova Gorica . Other important cities in this region are the Adriatic ports of Koper , Izola , Portorož and Piran . The southern part around the city of Koper is also called Slovenska Istra (Slovenian Istria).
