action

Ruby red

Released: January 2009
Rubinrot is about the family of 16-year-old Gwendolyn Shepherd, who have a special ability that gives each gene carrier the opportunity to travel into the past. The suspected next gene carrier is Gwendolyn's cousin Charlotte, who was also prepared for it for years. But since Gwendolyn “jumps” into the past, contrary to all conjectures, she takes over Charlotte's place in the secret organization, the “Lodge of the Count of Saint Germain”, where she is to be prepared for her upcoming tasks. But Gwendolyn fits in there with difficulty. In addition, they burden the hostility of Charlotte and her aunt, since, in their opinion, Gwendolyn has taken Charlotte away from her life's work. Another time traveler and her partner is Gideon de Villiers, who also makes life difficult for her. Gwendolyn and Gideon are given the task by the guards to collect a little blood from all time travelers in order to “read” it into a device known as a chronograph. What exactly the chronograph does when it has all the blood samples is left in the dark, but it turns out that the time travelers of their previous generation, Lucy and Paul, stole an early chronograph with an almost complete set of blood samples and went underground. Your motives for this are unclear. However, the members of the Count of Saint Germain's lodge are convinced that Lucy and Paul want the "result" of the chronograph for themselves, since the Count of Saint Germain's secret writings always describe that whoever owns the chronograph gets great power. Gwendolyn has the additional gift of seeing ghosts and demons.

Sapphire blue

Released: January 5, 2010
Sapphire blue ties in directly with ruby red . Gwendolyn and Gideon are looking for Lucy and Paul, who stole one of the two chronographs and supposedly want to destroy an ancient secret. Should your blood be read into the chronograph, the blood circulation would be complete. In addition, Gwendolyn had to learn various manners from the 18th century, as she had to go to a soirée with Gideon to get to know the Count of Saint Germain better. He was one of the 12 time travelers and founder of the secret box of the guards, he also discovered the usefulness of the chronograph. When Gwendolyn happened to meet her grandfather Lucas Montrose, who was already dead in the present and was a young man in the middle of the 20th century, while traveling back in time, she tried to solve the riddle of the chronograph with him. Gwendolyn begins to doubt the lodge more and more and wonders whether Lucy and Paul's views are really as wrong as everyone claims - after all, Gwendolyn's own mother says that Lucy and Paul do not complete the bloodstream and use its power for themselves want, but only fled to prevent this. Gwen's relationship with Gideon becomes increasingly complicated and one of distrust, secrecy and jealousy, until Gideon declares his love for Gwendolyn on the way to a renewed meeting with the Count of Saint Germain. The Count, however, tells her that he advised Gideon to make his time travel partner fall in love with him and when Gideon picks her up from the Count, she asks him whether he actually planned that she would fall in love with him and he affirms the question, whereupon Gwendolyn falls into deep heartache.

Emerald green

Released: December 8, 2010
Smaragdgrün follows on from the second volume. Together with her friends, Gwendolyn finds the stolen chronograph in the present. During one ball in the past, Gwendolyn narrowly escapes death, and Gideon confesses his love to her. He was firmly convinced that she was dead because a sword had pierced her aorta (main artery). Gideon does some research. When he visits Gwendolyn that same day, he explains to her that she is immortal and that no one is able to kill her except herself. She also learns from the guards that Lucy and Paul are her true parents. Gwendolyn and Gideon then travel back in time to forge a plan with them against the Count of Saint Germain, who wants to use the power of the closed blood circulation in the chronograph and Gwendolyn for himself. As soon as the blood circulation in the chronograph is closed, you get a powder that gives you immortality. The count wants to use this so-called philosopher's stone for himself. However, his immortality would only last until the time of Gwendolyn's birth, and so at the height of the story the Count captures Gwendolyn and threatens her with Gideon's murder if she does not commit suicide.

It turns out that Mr. Whitman, her teacher of history and English, is the Earl of Saint Germain. The count shoots Gideon. But Gideon was given the immortality powder by Lucy and Paul, so that he survived it. In the end, Gideon and Gwendolyn are both immortal and happily in love. During the epilogue, the question remains whether Mr. Bernhard is related to Gwendolyn, since the housekeeper calls Lucy and Paul Mr. and Mrs. Bernhard. However, since Lucy and Paul are expecting a second child as early as 1919, it is unlikely that he is their brother, otherwise he would be 92 years old at the time of the novel, but he is described as being about the same age as Lucas Montrose or Aunt Maddy. However, Kerstin Gier has personally confirmed that he is a nephew of Gwendolyn. That would fit better in terms of age, since Mr. Bernhard is probably in his late 60s and his father, the second child of Lucy and Paul, could have had offspring at around 25.

Errors and inaccuracies

The timelines are partly out of sync. For example, the redemption of James' school spirit will only take effect retrospectively after he has been warned by Gwendolyn. The count, on the other hand, is immortal before he got the powder (according to the chronological bookstore). However, according to the author, it is also a special case. In addition, these "inaccuracies" could also represent time paradoxes - in the case of James, for example, the fact that he must first get to know Gwen as a ghost in the future and tell her about his smallpox disease. Only with this information Gwen draws the conclusion that he died of smallpox and can thus save him in the past.

characters

Montrose family

Gwendolyn Sophie Elizabeth Shepherd

Gwendolyn is 16 years old, has straight black hair, pale skin, blue eyes and a crescent-shaped birthmark on his temple. She was born on October 7, 1994. Since her "mother" (great-aunt Grace) stated that Gwen was born on October 8, she was not considered as a bearer of the time travel blessing and was never prepared for time travel. Gwendolyn possesses the magic of the raven, with which the 12th time traveler is endowed according to the prophecy. This enables her to see ghosts (e.g. James, Robert) and demons (e.g. Xemerius). The ruby is assigned to her. Gwendolyn's real parents are Lucy Montrose and Paul de Villiers, which is why she is immortal, as Lucy and Paul are both time travelers. Gwendolyn's best friend is Leslie Hay, who helps her in all situations. In the course of history, Gwendolyn also falls in love with Gideon.

Charlotte Montrose

Charlotte is Gwendolyn's cousin and was also born on October 7, 1994. She has bright red, curly hair, is tall, slender and very pretty, but also very conceited. Charlotte has been prepared for time travel her whole life, so she is angry with Gwendolyn, who now has the time travel gene. Nor does she want Gwen and Gideon to get too close, because she herself has feelings for the time traveler. She is very good at school. She usually hides her feelings behind a "Mona Lisa smile".

Grace Shepherd

Grace is supposedly Gwen's mother. She works as an administrative clerk at Bartholemew's Hospital . She has bright red, curly hair and is over 40 years old. Grace was with Gwendolyn's uncle, Falk de Villiers. Grace is the aunt of Lucy and Gwendolyn's great aunt. She helped Lucy and Paul escape and raised Gwendolyn on their behalf.

Nick Shepherd

Nick is Gwen's younger brother (great cousin) and 12 years old. Like his mother, he has bright red, curly hair. He's one of the few who believe Gwen can see ghosts.

Caroline Shepherd

Caroline is the little sister of Nick and Gwen (grandcousin) and is 9 years old. She too has bright red, curly hair. Caroline is very sensitive and likes animals very much. She's also the owner of a real vintage crochet pig named Margaret. It does not appear in the films, however.

Lady Arista Montrose

Lady Arista is the mother of Grace, Glenda and Harry. She is Gwen's grandmother (great grandmother). She has white, formerly red, curly hair and is very elegant and cool. Lady Arista is the wife of the late Lord Lucas Montrose.

Glenda Montrose

Glenda is Charlotte's mother, Grace's sister, and Gwen's aunt (great-aunt). She is divorced from her husband Charles. She makes everyone understand that Charlotte is special. She too has bright red, curly hair and is tall and slender. Glenda is arrogant and arrogant.

Madeleine Montrose

Maddy is the sister of the late Lord Lucas Montrose and thus Gwen's great-aunt (great-great-aunt). She is single, plump and small, has blue eyes and golden blonde hair. She has visions and is considered slightly insane by her family. She helps her niece Gwendolyn in many situations and is always there for her. Maddy is very fond of lemon candy.

Guardian

Gideon de Villiers

Gideon was born in 1992 and is 18 years old. He has green eyes and shoulder length, brown, curly hair. Gideon is the 11th person to have the time travel gene and stands for the diamond . Before traveling through time, he played successfully in the polo team at Greenwich's Vincent Boarding School as a team captain . Also fencing is one of its properly applied talents. This can be seen in the last volume, when Gideon fights against an agent from Saint Germain when Gwendolyn was apparently murdered by the enemy. He's also musical, he plays the violin and piano . He is studying medicine at the University of London and has his own apartment in Chelsea. He lives there alone because his mother has moved to France with her new husband and brother Raphael. Having been prepared for time travel all his life, he was unable to lead a normal life and has built up prejudices against non-time travelers. At first he is very arrogant and mean towards Gwendolyn, but later he falls in love with her and they become a couple.

Falk de Villiers

Falk is a distant relative of Gideon and Grand Master of the Secret Box. He has amber eyes and has been with Grace for a short time. He is the brother of Paul de Villiers.

Mr. Thomas George

Mr. George is a 76 year old guard. He began his career with the Guardians as a secretary to Lucas Montrose. Mr. George is bald, plump, small, and very friendly, especially to Gwendolyn. He also immediately believes her that she can see the dead.

Dr. Jacob White

Dr. White is a doctor with the guards, he had a son named Robert who drowned at the age of seven and whose spirit is always with him. Dr. White is very grumpy and suspicious. But he also helps Gwendolyn in an uptight situation. This can also be seen in the last part. When Mr. Whitman tried to force Gwendolyn to murder himself by apparently killing Gideon, Gwen wanted to kill himself. But Dr. White was lying in the room, unconscious, but at the right moment he woke up and was able to kill the count. So he saved Gwen and Gideon's life and love.

Leopold Marley

Mr. Marley is an adept at the Guardian Headquarters. He has red hair and is very meticulous about rules. He often starts to stutter and blushes quickly. He is also a distant relative of Rakoczy, the soul brother of the Count of Saint Germain.

Mr. William Whitman

Mr. Whitman is Gwen's, Leslie's, and Charlotte's handsome history teachers and one of the Guardians. He is adored by many schoolgirls as Prince Charming, Gwen and Leslie like to compare him to a squirrel because of his big brown eyes. He wears a signet ring (on it is a star with twelve points), which distinguishes him as a member of the guards. In truth, however, he is the Count of Saint Germain, who has become immortal by completing the blood circle in the past.

Madame Rossini

Madame Rossini is the seamstress for the guards. She is French and speaks with a heavy French accent. She is very nice and likes to refer to Gwen as "swan falsify". Charlotte calls her a "'unger'aken". She also lends Gideon and Gwen costumes for a secret trip back in time. Gwenny thinks Madam Rossini looks like a turtle.

Raphael Bertelin

Raphael is Gideon's little brother. He is 17 years old, tall, has blond hair and green eyes. Raphael lived with his mother in France, but then ran away from home and has lived in London ever since. He is fascinated by Leslies Art.

James is the school spirit that only Gwendolyn can see. He teaches them in the manners of the 18th century. He was born on March 31, 1762, but then died at a young age of pox (smallpox). James wears cosmetic bottles and a wig.

Xemerius

Xemerius is a gargoyle demon, only Gwendolyn can see him. It has paws, cat ears, wings, a tail, and fangs. Xemerius adds his mustard to every little thing, but is otherwise very lovable and funny. He is always at Gwendolyn's side.

Mr. W. Bernhard

Mr. Bernhard (first name unknown, begins with W) is the butler at the Montrose house. Nobody knows who he really is, Grace calls him "grandmother's factotum", Lady Arista calls him "an old friend of the family". He has glasses and owl eyes. Since Lucy and Paul bear the surname Bernhard after their escape into the past in 1912 and are expecting another child, one can deduce that he is the son of Gwendolyn's brother, Gwendolyn's nephew, due to the time difference between past and present .

past

Lady Margret Tilney

Margret Tilney is a distant relative of Gwendolyn and also owns a time traveler. She is the jade and the fox. She lived from 1877 to 1944. She is the grandmother of Lady Arista. She housed Lucy and Paul for some time from 1912. She is the 8th person to have the time travel gene.

Lucy has red hair, big blue eyes and a violet complexion. She is also the birth mother of Gwendolyn.

Paul de Villiers

Paul was born in 1974 and is the younger brother of Falk de Villiers. He is the 9th person who carries the time travel gene and stands for the black tourmaline / wolf. He fled into the past with Lucy. Paul has black hair, amber eyes and a dimple on his chin. He is Gwendolyn's biological father.

The count ingests the elixir of the chronograph and becomes immortal. At present he's the history teacher Mr. Withman.

Miroslav Alexander Leopold Rakoczy

Rakoczy (called "the black leopard") is the count's soul brother and an ancestor of Mr. Marley. He has black eyes that look like holes and a weakness for intoxicants. He comes from Transylvania and is a brave Kuruzze .

Lord Lucas Montrose

Lucas is Grace's father and Gwen's grandfather. He married Lady Arista. Lucas is a former Grand Master of the Lodge. At the start of the plot, he's already dead, but he helps Gwendolyn a lot when she visits him during her time travel. Mr. Marley's grandfather murdered him because he nearly discovered the count. He died in 2004 when Gwendolyn was just ten years old.
