Liebesleid (Original title: Smilin 'Through ) is an American film drama from 1932 . The script is based on the play Smilin 'Through by Jane Cowl and Jane Murfin.
action
England at the turn of the century: John Carteret is still mourning his fiancée Moonyean Clara, who died on their wedding anniversary in 1868. Moonyean was fatally injured by a pistol shot which the drunk Jeremy Wayne, who wanted to marry Moonyean himself, fired at John in jealous anger, but accidentally hit Moonyean. Now John spends his days walking in the garden, which was the place where they were happiest, and talking to their spirit. Dr. Owen, John's friend, is concerned that John will get lost in the past. He asks if he would like to take care of Moonyean's five-year-old orphaned niece Kathleen. At first John is dismissive, but when he meets the girl, he cannot send her away.
In 1915, Kathleen grew into a pretty young woman. She looks very much like her aunt and has become John's life. Kathleen has many admirers, but shows no interest in them. On a rainy afternoon, she and her boyfriend Willie Ainley seek refuge in an abandoned mansion. Kathleen meets the owner, the attractive American Kenneth Wayne, Jeremy's son. After Moonyean's death, Jeremy went to America and got married there. Kenneth came to Europe as a soldier to fight in the war. He doesn't know anything about Jeremy's act or Kathleen. The two fall in love.
Kathleen tells John about Kenneth. He tells her the tragic story of her aunt and makes her promise never to see Kenneth again. But the love between her and Kenneth is so deep that she cannot keep her promise and begins to meet him secretly. The night before Kenneth is assigned to the front, Kathleen tells John that she will marry Kenneth that night. Kenneth worries that Kathleen could quickly become a widow. He also knows how much she cares about John. He doesn't marry her and sends her home.
When the war ends, Kathleen waits for Kenneth to return. She finds him in the villa. Kenneth was badly wounded in the war and doesn't want to be a burden for Kathleen. He tells her that he doesn't love her anymore. She returns home shocked. Dr. Owen informs John what happened. In the garden, John speaks to Moonyean's ghost, who tells him to forget the past and help the young people. He has Kenneth brought in and reunites him and Kathleen so they can get married and go to America. After Kathleen and Kenneth leave, John plays a game of chess with Dr. Owen. At some point he falls asleep. Dr. Owen quietly leaves the house, Moonyean's ghost appears and takes John's hand. John's body is left behind as his mind goes hand in hand with Moonyean's mind.
