The American feature film Favorite Enemies - A Soap Opera (Original Title: Soapdish ) from 1991 is a comedy film that parodies daily soap operas .

action

The main character is the actress Celeste Talbert, star in the daily soap The Sun Also Sets (the title possibly refers to the novel The Sun Also Rises (Eng. Fiesta ) by Ernest Hemingway ), in which she plays the role of "Maggie".

At the beginning of the film, Celeste wins the award for best actress in a television series for the eighth time. Her fiercest competitor is Montana Moorehead, in the series the "Nurse Nan", who intrigues against Celeste and would like to get rid of her. Celeste's best friend is the sober and laid-back scriptwriter Rose Schwartz, who keeps crying out over her. If there is no consolation, Rose goes into town with Celeste and draws passers-by to her attention - every time there are masses and expressions of sympathy, after which Celeste is better off.

Celeste's private life is chaotic, she has changing affairs and even after 20 years still thinks of her childhood sweetheart, the actor Jeffrey Anderson, who once played as "Rod Randall" in The Sun Also Sets . At Celeste's insistence, his role was written off the series - according to the script, he was beheaded in a car accident.

Montana Moorehead urges producer David Barnes to throw Celeste out of the series - if successful, she offers him the prospect of going to bed with him. She wants to bring Celeste's hated ex-boyfriend Jeffrey back on the show to poke Celeste out and assigns David to find Jeffrey. After a long search David finds Jeffrey in a dinner theater, where he plays the role of "Willy Loman" from the death of a traveling salesman in front of mentally confused old people . David offers Jeffrey to return to the series. Jeffrey's reaction is auspicious: " I'm going to ruin her (Celestes) life as she ruined mine! "

"Rod Randall's" resurrection from the dead is explained by the fact that his head was reattached in a grandiose operation. In the meantime he was in Europe and lived in Vienna for a long time. Celeste faints when Jeffrey shows up on the set and there is an argument almost daily. Still, Celeste stays in the series because she believes she can't live without The Sun Also Sets .

Is David's next idea, "Maggie" to miss a disfiguring disease, but Montana reminds him of another series in which an actress a weak bladder was dictated to, " They could swamped with sympathy letter - it has become the most prominent advocate of bed-wetter, today she has her own mission and collects for charity! “Montana suggests turning“ Maggie ”into a murderer - stabbing a homeless person.

Rose is furious and refuses to write such a scene for her best friend. However, David plays the desperate in front of Celeste, who is pressured by his boss, and thus makes her give in. She is also supposed to kill the homeless person in self-defense because she attacked her with a knife.

The homeless, who is also mute, is played by Lori Craven. When she attacks Celeste, it turns out that she is Celeste's niece. The murder scene remains unturned, instead Lori also gets a role in the series - from now on she is the silent "Angelique", and Montana recognizes her as a new competitor.

Celeste watches her niece Lori meet with Jeffrey Anderson and is beside herself. Rose doesn't understand her excitement and thinks she's jealous.

Also in the series, “Dr. Rod Randall ”and“ Angelique ”closer - when they want to hug and kiss, Celeste intervenes and pounces on Jeffrey. It turns out that Lori is not her niece, but her daughter - and Jeffrey Lori's father. The scene is featured on the evening news, and the series' ratings, which have been falling by then, are reaching unprecedented levels. Montana attacks David with a baseball bat when he tells her that the silent "Angelique" should get her voice back - a sign that she is the new star of the series.

Lori is outraged by her supposed aunt's longstanding lies and doesn't want anything to do with Celeste, as is Jeffrey. He and Lori try to forge a father-daughter relationship, which ends abruptly when Montana suddenly claims to be pregnant by Jeffrey. Lori believes her and turns away from her father too. Ultimately, she gives the head of production a choice: Either her parents leave the series - or she.

In the last scene of The Sun Also Sets , even the actors don't know the outcome of the episode - they read their text from the teleprompter. The teleprompter causes Jeffrey considerable trouble because he is extremely nearsighted and does not want to wear his ugly glasses. The boss remarks, “ Has the guy never heard of contact lenses? "

"Dr. Randall ”reveals to“ Angelique ”that she has an incurable brain tumor and will soon die - so it's Lori who has to leave the series. Before her death, “Angelique” will still suffer from mental confusion - Quote: “ Or as we say in Austria - hit the head! “The teleprompter text is displayed and actually contains the sentence:“ Or what we call in Austria - head hit! "

Celeste doesn't want to let Lori leave the show. She ignores the given text and suggests “Dr. Randall ”proposed a brain transplant for which she donated her own brain. At that moment Lori decides to forgive her mother - on the condition that there will never be lies between them again.

Everyone present sobs with emotion, but before the final reconciliation, Montana has one more appearance and repeats her claim that she is pregnant by Jeffrey. Rose Schwartz appears on the scene - she has since found out that Montana was a man - “Milton Moorehead” - who had surgery to become a woman. So Montana cannot possibly be pregnant. Montana leaves the studio screaming.

The film ends with another award show - Celeste and Jeffrey, again a couple, have already received their trophies, and the award for best supporting actress in a television series goes to their daughter Lori. Celeste and Jeffrey are proud of her. The Dinner Theater is also shown - the new "Willy Loman" is played by Milton Moorehead.
